How many times have we heard the refrain- real life imitating reel life? Or someone says exactly as in the movies. Well I experienced it last year.

First let me relate my experience. Same time last year I was on my holidays to Europe. Switzerland was my first halt. I was as excited as any kid thinking that I will be seeing the Swiss Alps etc. for the first time in my life. Immediately on landing I updated my status across all the groups I am a part of which read “in Yash Chopra Land”. And one of my friends posted a picture of hers on a snow-clad mountain.

Immediately I sent her a message asking where it was clicked and she replied that it was at Jungfrau the highest point in the Alps. Then I asked her when had she visited the place and she replied that she had just returned to her hotel from there. Now I was most eager to find out her itinerary for the next day. It turned out that she was going to be in Mt. Titlis at the same time as me and we promised to look out for each other. In between all this I also happened to get a message from our very own YYIIPPEEEE! Master that he had been in that region a few days before me. And I thought that it would have been wonderful we I could have met him also there on foreign soil. So the next morning I got ready faster than usual and the first thing I did on reaching the assembly point below Titlis was to look for my friend which was not a big task as her group had also just reached. Imagine the joy of meeting a classmate from school after a good 33 years. And we have been having the occasional class reunion here in India but she had been missing it for various reasons. And to think that so many years back we were a close knit gang of 40 notorious students.

That was an incident from real life. I have seen something similar in the movies too. This was from a Yash Chopra movie. Chandni has a scene where Rishi Kapoor goes to Switzerland (where else) for getting treatment for his paralytic upper body. Post treatment he goes around taking in the sights and sounds of the place. He happens to here a small couplet in shudh Hindi or was it Punjabi; looks around to find Vinod Khanna there. They strike a friendship as only Indians can.

We have this knack of: where are you from? I’m from India where are you from? I’m also from India. Where in India? Mumbai. Arrey I’m also from Mumbai. Where in Mumbai? Andheri. Arrey I also have connections in Andheri. Oh which part of Andheri? Seven Bungalows. O I said na I am also connected to Andheri, I studied in Seven Bungalows. Oh is it! Which institute? VWAS. Arrey even I was there. Which year about 84 oh I was there from 84- 94. Ahh was Mrs. Hakim your principal too? This conversation actually took place between me and my tour guide on my last year’s holiday. I have been framing and reframing the words of this post mentally for the last one year and thought that it is high time I wrote it out as I am looking forward to my vacation of this summer.

Since I spoke of Chaandni let us have a song from that movie today. Why not have the song which follows the scene I described above. It is written by Anand Bakshi and Shiv Hari were the music directors. Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor lip sync in the voices of Suresh Wadkar and Nitin Mukesh.

Song-Tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaun (Chaandni)(1989) Singers-Nitin Mukesh, Suresh Wadkar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Shiv Hari

tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaoon
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani
tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaoon
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani

rahti hai khaamosh sada
bas ek paheli si wo
hardam mere saath magar
lagti hai akeli si wo

ek hi baat mein kar jaati hai
wo kitni hi baatein
uski baatein khatm na hon
dhal jaayen lambi raatein
kabhi kabhi lagti hai apni
kabhi kabhi begaani

tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaun
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani

mere dil mein bajte hain
uski yaadon ke ghunghroo
usko dekha to main jaana
kya hota hai jaadu

angdaayi wo leti hai
dil mera dhadak jaata hai
uske phool badan se
ik shola sa lapak jaata hai
wo chhoo le to aag lage
jal jaaye yaar ye paani
tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaun
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani

door se usko dekh ke
dil ki pyaas bujha leta hoon
sapnon mein usko main apne paas bula leta hoon

tere dil mein apne dil ki
aag laga deta hoon
aur na kuchh tu poochh
main uska naam bata doon
naam bata deta hoon
uska naam bata deta hoon
ek naam hai pyaar usi ka
doosra naam jawaani
tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaun
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani

tu mujhe suna main tujhe sunaaun
apni prem kahaani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani
kaun hai wo kaisi hai wo
tere sapnon ki raani
