“Chaandni” (1989) was a Yashraj Pictures production. It was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. The movie had Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Sridevi, Bharat Bhushan, Juhi Chawla, Sridevi, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Anupam Kher, Beena, Renu Arya, Mita Vashist, Manju Maini, Asha Sharma, Anant Mahadevan, Ram Gopal Bajaj, Shyam Arora, Manohar Singh, Achala Sachdev, Lalit Tiwari, Suhas Joshi, Ram Maini, Idris Malik, etc in it.
Today (13 september) is the birthday of Vinod Rathod. On this occasion, here is a song from “”Chaandni” (1989). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Vinod Rathod. The song is picturised as a rain song on Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor. This rain song came some two decades after the glory days of Mumtaz Rajesh Khanna rain songs. Unlike Mumtaz who would be dressed in Netherland’s national colours of orange, Sri Devi has decided to wear white, the national colour of Brazil. But why Brazil, of all nations ?
When I had shown my (then 10 year old) daughter the video of a rain song picturised on Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna, she had enquired whether India was a poor nation those days. On my asking why she thought so, she explained that both Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna were dancing in the same wet clothes throughout the song, which meant that Indians those days did not have enough money and clothes, whereas modern day songs show the dancing duo changing their clothes every few seconds.
Going by my daughter’s yardstick of judging the prosperity of India by the picturisation of Hindi movie rain songs, one has to say that India had not made much progress in two decades, seeing that here too Sridevi is seen dancing while wearing the same dress throughout the song. Rishi Kapoor’s clothes though miraculously change from black to white midway, but that has to do more with continuity oversight rather than any improvement in per capita income of Indian males from the days of Rajesh Khanna.
It is good that modern day actors have enogh to wear these days. It is another matter that they prefer not to wear much now a days. But that is a matter to be discussed some other time.

Vinod Rathod is the brother of Singer Roop Kumar Rathod(Border,Bhairavi,Gulzar`s album Vaada) and Music Director Shravan Rathod (Of Nadeem Shravan).
Vinod Rathod was introduced by Usha khanna in Bedaag(1986)( in a qawwali to sing alongwith co-singer Mohammed Aziz)
Afterwards Laxmikant Pyarelal took him under their wings and gave many chances of Playback singing.
Also sang for Vijay(shivhari),Premgranth,Baazigar,Vijay,Khalnayak,
Roop ki raani choron ka raja,Devdas,Jeet,Deewana(nadeem shravan)Tere mere sapne(Viju Shah)
Trimurti(Laxmipyare)etc.
