Heer Ranjha of 1948 was produced by Punjab Film Corporation, Bombay and directed by Vali Saheb, who also wrote lyrics for all the eleven songs for the film. One of the songs was in Punjabi language, no wonder as the production house was Punjab Film Corporation and the film was based on very famous tragic folk-lore of lovers Heer and Ranjha from Punjab. The star cast according to HFGK included Mumtaz Shanti, Ghulam Mohammad, Gulab, Roop Kamal, Majnu, Raamlal, Gulnar, Malik Amin, Aziz, Minaai, Neela Devi, Aziz Kashmiri, Nauratavi etc.

I am aware that Begum Para and Paro Devi are two different actresses. There is no same name confusion. Yet momentarily, I tend to get confused with the names of these two actresses. If someone to ask me as to which one of these two actresses was in the film ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947), I may have to think for a while before giving the correct answer, that is Begum Para.

I received my first copy of HFGK in February 2015 and after that it become my routine to go through it as and when possible and search for songs covered on the blog as well as songs that were yet to be covered and other interesting information of movies from the decade of 1971-80.

There I took up this series of ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ – ‘The decades of Seventies 1971-1980’ which is still going on, and obviously it will take a long time till we have all the availablesongs from this decadecovered on the blog.

Today (15 august 2016) is the 69th independence day of India.

With the passage of so much time, the general knowledge of younger generation about Indian freedom struggle and independence is no longer what it used to be in the past. One study mentions that the biggest source to make people aware of our independence day are patriotic songs from movies, followed by school text books.
