This Week, That Year – 5

09May – 15May, 2011
It has been a long gap. The previous post in this series had come on 23rd Sep, 2020. And the post number was 15911. About seven and a half month’s worth of waterflow has passed under all the bridges. That was 231 days ago. And 450 posts ago. The blog has clocked four more century milestones, and is close to a fifth now.
An understatement it is – that life has changed in these past months. A lot of ideas and motivation for writing has been numbed. Even with the time and inclination both pointing in the right directions, the flow of writing is simply not coming together. Every week for the past 5 or 6 weeks, I scrutinize the 10 year challenge lists. Ideas form in the mind, but somehow do not get on to paper. For this week’s analysis and this post, I have been checking on the week status from a decade ago, for past couple of days. And then today, just decided to start off with this inability to articulate. Let’s see where it will lead to.

In the year 1969, “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu” – the song from ‘Aradhana’ had taken the entire nation by storm. So many things of this song became such dear memories, that have lasted for decades. Of course, the melody (Sachin Da) and its rendition (Kishore Kumar) are absolutely superlative. The song, and its popularity paved the way and propelled Rajesh Khanna towards super stardom. And the other things about this song – well the parallel drive of the army jeep and the toy train is one. Sharmila Tagore sittings in the window seat in the train is absolutely ravishing with her smile and dimpled cheeks. She is reading a novel, rather pretending to read, as her eyes and mind are on the antics of the young man in the jeep. Ah yes, and the novel she has in her hand – a very popular thriller writer of that era – Alistair Maclean; and the title of novel – ‘When Eight Bells Toll’. (No, no, don’t worry, I will not get into the story line of the novel 🙂 ).

Yesterday, 25th July, was the anniversary of passing away of GS Kohli, the music director extraordinaire. He passed away in 1996, in Bombay.
A long time assistant music director to OP Nayyar, he had a short stint as an independent music director in the decade of 1960s. Despite a load of fantastic lilting songs in all his films – songs that became instant hits, very popular in their times, and still continue to be favourites of the lovers of the golden era of Hindi film music – he remained confined to B/C grade stunt films only. He continued to work as OPN’s assistant before, during and after his stint as an independent music director.

With this post, I return to one of the requests of Arvinder ji that has been pending for some time now. His reminders keep coming to me, and there are more pending requests from him lined up in my inbox.
This song can well be the continuation of the ‘Memory Ticklers’ series. A lilting melody that was often heard on the radio when I used to regularly listen, and then later it seemed to have faded from the memories. Depend on Arvinder ji to recall and remind to dig up such gems to once again be played and listened.

One of the key threads of genres that runs through the films of 1960s is an array of action films that were centered around the he-man actor Dara Singh. This was the period when Dara Singh constituted an entire segment of the film industry all by himself. Stories and screenplays were written keeping him as the center of the universe. His larger than life physical presence, his standing as a real life body builder and wrestler of international repute, and his reputation as an upright person with very clean habits and a very honest, very humane person – all these characteristics made him a very popular figure with the masses. Here was a screen hero who would be easily idolized by the common man, for the simple reason that his screen roles were a very close reflection of his real life persona.
