Today’s song is from the film Mazdoor-1945, made by Filmistan. The film was directed by Nitin Bose (26-4-1897 to 14-4-1986).

After leaving New Theatres, Calcutta due to a dispute with B.N.Sircar, he decided to shift to Bombay. His dispute with Sircar was so bitter that Nitin Bose did not even see his last directed film ” Kashinath”-1943, till the end of his life. Before he came to Bombay, his name had already become famous here and many big studios were eager to employ him.

Today’s song is from film Insaaf-1946. This was a social film, directed by Phani Mujumdar and the music was by Hari Prasanna Das aka H P Das. The lyrics came from the veteran, successful lyricist D N Madhok. This film is a special one, because this was the Debut film for Balraj Sahni, after he decided to join films.

Today’s song is from film Sati Toral-47. This film was made by Laxmi Productions, Bombay and was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The music was provided by a team of Hari Prasanna Das and Manna Dey. The song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki and Manna Dey. The lyrics were by Miss Kamal, B.A. This was a pseudonym of Kavi Pradeep. At that time, he was under contract with Bombay Talkies and could not use his real name . Under this Pen name, he wrote lyrics for four films, namely Kadambari-44, Amrapali-45, Sati Toral-47 and Veerangana-47. Incidentally, all these films were directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 14

KAADAMBARI (1944) was produced under the banner of Laxmi Productions and was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The star cast included Shanta Apte, Vanmala, Pahadi Sanyal, Harish, Jeevan etc. There were 15 songs in the film, all penned by Miss Kamal B.A, a pseudonym which Kavi Pradeep used for this film, probably due to his contract with Bombay Talkies. The songs were set to music by Hari Prasanna Das.

Though Mumbai gangout happened nearly a month ago (on 21 december 2014), details about it are slow in coming. I wrote about my preparations to join this meet in this article on 3 january 2015. Then nothing happened for several days. I was pleasantly surprised to see an entertaining writeup from Sudhir ji on 13 january 2015 in which he describes his experiences from the planning stage till his arrival at the venue on the D day.

The above wonderful writeup has now inspired me to write the second part of my own take on this meet. So here is goes.

The other day, I received a phone call from an unexpected quarter – Bhole and Chhote, the adopted ‘kids’ of Atul, lodging a sort of complaint against their Master that they have been neglected in his Blog for a long time.

I have discussed songs from “Ham Bhi Insaan Hain”(1959) in this blog. It turns out that there was another movie of the same title which was produced in 1948. This movie was produced by Ghanshamdas and directed by Phani Majumdar. This movie had Dev Anand, Ramola, Anand Pal, Ganshamdas, Jerman, Vinodini etc in it.

About a month back, I stumbled upon a song ‘aankhen to huyi band magar dard jagaa re’ from the film BEGUM (1945) sung by Ashok Kumar. Until then, I had neither heard of this song nor of the film which had Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano in the lead roles. I liked the song so much that I must have listened to it umpteen times. The song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Hari Prasanna Das (H P Das) whose name also I heard for the first time. From the Indian Film Trade Data website, I observed that H P Das had given music to 10 Hindi films between 1935 and 1948 including 2-3 films jointly with Manna Dey.
