In the post-silent film era, Pramathesh Chandra Barua (P C Barua) directed 13 Hindi films many of which had Bangla versions as well. Three of his films – ‘Devdas’ (1935), ‘Mukti’ (1937) and ‘Jawaab’ (1942) and their Bangla versions were super hits. These are classic films which connoisseurs of vintage films would like to have in their collections. While an abridged Hindi version of ‘Devdas’ (1935) is available (probably deleting the damaged portions of the original print), its Bangla version was destroyed in a fire in New Theatres many years ago. There is only one copy of the Bangla version of this film available with Bangladesh Film Archives that too with about 40% of the film being damaged. Hindi version of films ‘Mukti’ (1937) and ‘Jawaab’ (1942) are not available but their Bangla versions are available.

Recently, I read the biography of P C Barua, a multi-faceted personality and one of the architects of the Indian cinema. The biography is written by Shoma A Chatterji under a series ‘The Legends of Indian Cinema’ (2008). The 116 pages book is in an unusual size – a square pocket book covering mainly his association with cinema. After reading the biography, the first thought that came to my mind was whether Guru Dutt was influenced by P C Barua’s personality as well as his style of film making. Both had moody behaviour and melancholic bent of mind. Both excelled in melodramatic films. Incidentally, Guru Dutt was staying in Calcutta (Kolkatta) when P C Barua was creating waves with his films like ‘Devdas (1935), Manzil (1936) , ‘Mukti’ (1937), ‘Zindagi’ (1940), ‘Jawaab’ (1942) etc and their Bengali versions.

When he passed away twenty four years ago, in 1989, it was just one year after that he had received the national award for the Best Male Singer (1988). This was despite the fact that he had suffered a major heart attack in 1980, after which, many reviewers said that he was not his original self, and had lost the quality of his voice.

Jaganmoy Mitra – that is the name behind the voice of such incredible gems as “Ye Na Bataa Sakoonga Main, Dil Ko Hai Tum Se Pyaar Kyun”, “Aankhon Mein Basaa Mann Hai Mera, Mann Mein Basaa Kaun”, “Meri Aankhen Bani Deewaani” , “Sapnon Mein Mujhko Pyaar Milaa”, and so many more non-film and film songs, that will never fail to tickle the heart and move the listener to feel the emotion behind the words. For more than seven decades, the treasures of his voice have pleased discerning listener’s of many generations. A voice that always kept to classical and semi classical consistency, and then faded away from the mainline singing for films, around the mid 50s. Yet, his popularity has not waned. Limited maybe, the treasure of his singing gems, but his name evokes a pleasant attachment, whenever his songs are played.

Remembering Jagmohan ‘Sursagar’ on the anniversary of his birth today (6th September).

I like to do things methodically. Whenever I have to write an article on a song, I first go through all the comments on the already posted songs of that film, if any, so that I do not repeat what has already been said. Further, if needed, I can quote from those comments. If it is a singer, actor or a film, I try to go through the available material-on the Blog or Net etc, to make my write up exclusive and I also ensure that whatever statements I make in my articles are defendable with evidence-if and whenever challenged. All this can add to the quality and credibility of the material provided and avoids repetition so that the article may not end up as an ” Also Ran “.

Somewhere in the late 2011 AK ji, of Songsofyore.com, had written on this Blog about the importance of NFS. After reading his views, I too wrote a rather lengthy comment supporting the inclusion of NFS on this Blog. Our contention was that, prior to the Hindi Film Music becoming popular all over India,it was those ghazals, Geets and Bhajans, privately sung and recorded by various artists which had ruled the tastes of music lovers. In fact many famous singers had recorded NFS in the beginning phase of their singing careers. Some names are Talat Mehmood, Saigal, Pankaj Mullick, Jagmohan and JUTHIKA ROY !
