Nagendranath Sanyal, more famously known as Pahari Sanyal, was born on 22nd February, 1906, in Darjeeling. Being born in the hilly region, he got the nickname as Pahari, a name that stuck for the rest of his life. His school education was completed in Lucknow. After completing his schooling, he enrolled in Benaras Hindu University, in engineering course. But his destiny and his interest dictated otherwise. He dropped engineering studies and joined classes for Hindustani classical music at Morris college in Lucknow. He learnt both classical vocal music and also instrumental music.

“Vidyapati” (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi talkies and it is one that was a landmark movie of its time. It was produced by Calcutta’s New Theatre. This movie starred Pahadi Sanyal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Kanan Devi, K C Dey, K N Singh, Kidar Sharma, Nemo, Chhaaya Devi, Leela Desai etc.

“Shokhiyaan” (1951) is a by now obscure movie. this movie was produced by Ambitious pictures and directed by Kidar Sharma. Cast of the movie included names like Nazira, Shanta Kanwar, Premnath, Suraiya, Jeewan, Kamlesh, Achla Sachdev, Rajendra Vyas, Ramesh Sinha etc.

“Jogan” is a movie which was made in 1950, but the person writing the story of this movie remained unnamed till 1999. It was in 1999 that Kidar Sharma, the director of the movie revealed that the story of “Jogan” (1950) was written by Chandulal Shah, but he declined to take the credit , and as a result, the credits of the movie carried a question mark instead of a name for half a century.

When one talks of a movie called “Caravan”, one normally means “Caravan” (1971), but I have just discovered that there was another movie of the same name which was released in 1944.
