Today’s song is from a C grade stunt film, Lutaru Lalana-1938.

1938 was the first decade of the Talkie films, which started in India in 1931 only. What an era it was ! I feel sad that the present generation (Zen G) can never ever even imagine the pleasure of seeing those films, which regaled the common man no end. I am talking about the C grade stunt/action/costume drama films made then. Those were the days when people went to the theatre with no preconceived notions, because they only went to see good stunts, dances and killing dialogues.

This was a class of lower middle class, working people and young children in their teens, who got entertainment at affordable ticket rates – no matter if the theatre was even 5 to 6 kms away to reach. Walking to get the desired timepass was no problem. No one from the audience expected a sane, reasonable story, no one was even bothered about the histrionic capabilities of the actors or the actresses.

Today’s song is from a very old, i.e. 83 year old film, which was one of the popular films of Wadia Movietone. The film was Lutaru Lalna-1938 and the title role was done by then famous stunt queen The Fearless nadia. Yes, this was a C grade stunt film. In those years, when the Talkie itself had not even entered it’s Teens, these stunt films, especially featuring Nadia were very popular. C grade stunt films were not yet looked down upon by the elite. That categorisation started from the mid 40’s, when social and films of other Genres divided the audience and stunts became the choice of the lower class of the society.

India became Independent in 1947 from British rule. Till that time, Patriotism and its open expression was considered as acts against the British Government and was a punishable crime. However,India , with a history of strong patriotism did not keep quiet. The Indian film industry also did not lag behind in this.
