“Bank Manager” (1959) is a movie few people today may have heard about. If I say that this movie had the music of Madan Mohan, then many people may consider it inevitable in the sense that most Madan Mohan movies indeed ended up as consigned to the dustbin of time.

Madan Mohan not only got the best out of Lata, he did that with other singers as well. In fact, he had the knack of getting the best out of every singer he worked with, because he had the ability to guage the range of the singer’s voice and he would tailor his music accordingly. Thus we have singers as varied as Lata, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh,Talat Mahmood, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder etc singing some of their most memorable songs under Madan Mohan.

I had never heard this song. When I listened to it for the first time yesterday, I almost felt like I was listening to a haunting song from “Mera Saaya” or “Woh Kaun Thi”. This song is indeed a Lata-Madan Mohan masterclass, but it is not from the aforementioned movies. This song is from a movie called “Rishte Naate” and as it happened so often in movies with Madan Mohan as the music director, this movie failed at the box office.
