Veena, that is in the hand of Goddess Saraswati; veena, that is the source of all knowledge and all that is music in this creation.
Yes, the voice of Lata ji. A voice that is adorned in many a thousand ways, a voice that lives in the minds and memories through many a thousand songs, in Hindi films, in films of other regions, and songs that don’t belong to films. The legacy is a treasure. Quite so much has been written about this voice, my adding more would simply be repeating what has been said before. And much of that discussion is an overbearing analysis of the phases and careers, that are after all moot points, when arrayed against the qualities of the voice itself. That discussion is like ‘गूंगे की शक्कर’ – the description of the sweetness of sugar as expressed by a person who cannot speak. He would place the sugar on your palm, and tell you silently, to taste it, to eat it. After that tasting, no words are necessary, to discuss what sugar is. 🙂

The 1937 film ‘Mukti’ from the banner of New Theatres, was considered a very bold move. A path breaking film that explores the complexities of relationship between a man and a woman. It was daring theme for its times, especially being tackled by a big name production house. The storyline is written by and the film is directed by PC Barua, who was at the height of his creative energies and his career. He was already a big name with New Theatres, having directed the 1935 hit film ‘Devdas’ for both Hindi and Bengali versions. He also played the lead role in the Bengali version.

After ‘Devdas’(1935), the most talked about film of New Theaters-P C Barua combination was ‘Mukti’ (1937). It was a path breaking film. It had a bold story relative to the time period and the new techniques of direction. It is claimed that ‘Mukti’ (1937) is the first film which was extensively shot outdoors in the forest of Gauripur (Assam). It was also the first film in which Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s poems were used for the songs in the Bengali version based on his tunes. Incidentally, when the untitled story of the film was narrated to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, he gave this movie its title viz. ‘Mukti’.

This is the title song of Mukti (1977). Death and Loss play a central role in the film in different forms. Thus this song is used in bits and parts throughout the film. I have included the complete audio version and also the bits which I could find, which were used in the film. Since these bits give away the ending of the film, a SPOILER ALERT! Please don’t watch the videos of the film, if you don’t want the ending to be revealed.

In Mukti (1977), Shashi Kapoor and Vidya Sinha play a happily married couple, till he is framed for murder and thus gets capital punishment. Thinking that he is dead she relocates to Bombay, where she meets the local goon, who helps the lonely “widow” and her daughter settle down. This other man is played by Sanjeev Kumar. In this song he seems to be drinking so that he can feel brave enough to admit his love to his adored one.

Mukti (1977) stars Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar and Bindiya Goswami. Shashi Kapoor plays Vidya Sinha’s husband. This happy couple has a daughter, who would grow up to be Bindiya Goswami. In the happier times of this small family, the father sings a lullaby to his daughter. As usual in films, these happy times don’t last forever and the father goes missing and then it is the mother’s turn to sing the lullaby with a similar mukhdaa but different antaras. Both versions are included here.

Mukti (1977) is Bindiya Goswami‘s debut film. From the looks of it this song most probably heralds her arrival on the screen. This also seems to be a song, which shows how the once small daughter has grown up and has stepped into her youth.
