In Hindi movies, songs were traditionally recorded twice- once for the picturisation and once for the audio (for the record company). The audio records were typically released prior to the release of the movie.

Dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya

I always thought that the song “dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya” from “Mother India” (1957) was a brief song, almost an afterthought. I do not know how I came to believe that. Perhaps I may have watched a brief portion of this song when I watched this movie (some 25 years after the movie was released) or perhaps because I have not heard this song in detail in the past.

Dil matwaalaa laakh sambhaalaa

I think I am familiar with most movies starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, but even I was stumped when I came across this movie called “Bewafaa” (1952). This movie is not all that well known, which means that this movie did not do all that well.That way, this movie suffered the same fate as “Aashinaa”, another Raj Kapoor-Nargis starrer.

Sakhi ri chitchor nahin aaye

I have posted one immortal bhajan from “Jogan” (Ghoonghat ke pat khol re )in this blog in the past. That song was a Meera Bhajan sung by Geeta Dutt (then Geeta Roy). This movie in fact has several fantastic songs sung by Geeta Dutt.

“Mela” (1948) was a movie starring very young Nargis and Dilip Kumar in lead roles.

Indian independence also brought partition, and it caused human suffering on a large scale. Quite a few movies were made on this subject. “Lahore” (1949), starring Karan Dewan and Nargis was one of the first such movies on this subject.
