Remembering IS Johar on the anniversary of his passing away on 10th March.
I S Johar, the redoubtable and simply irrepressible personality of the Hindi cinema world is well known for his versatility, his topicality, and his penchant for being in the news for a variety of reasons. Whether it be multiple marriages or open support for male sterilization, he was a strongly opinionated person, with emphatic views, and yet and aloof and a suave demeanor. He is also known to be a very well read person, and his ‘Question Box’ in the magazine Filmfare, was popular for many years.

This song is one that I thought I had already discussed in the blog. The first time I became aware of O P Nayyar was in mid 1970s, when I read about him in a Hindi magazine (Dharmyug, perhaps, where it was mentioned that he made a successful career for himself without using Lata Mangewshkar’s voice even once). This got by curiosity roused. I found out that “Naya Daur” (1957) was a breakthrough movie for him as well as for many others associated with the movie. Ao I became aware of all the songs of this movie. One can see the lyrics of several songs from this movie noted down in a a diary where I used to note down the lyrics of songs that I liked those days. One can say that my diary showed which songs I liked in 1970s. And I liked the songs of “Naya Daur” (1957).

Singers like Jagmohan Sursagar, Talat Mehmood, C H Atma, Juthika Ray etc were the biggest names on the private music circles.

I find that there are 18 songs listed under ‘Song excluded from movie’ category in this blog. Although the sample is not representative one to come to a definite conclusion, it is interesting to note that O P Nayyar leads in this category with 5 songs followed by Madan Mohan(4 songs), S D Burman (3 songs) and Naushad(2 songs). Sajjad Hussain, Husnalal Bhagatram, Bulo C Rani and Roshan have one song each in this category.

“CID” (1956) as well as “CID 909” (1967) had music by the same music director, viz O P Nayyar. Unlike “CID” (1956), “CID 909” was a B grade movie though. It was a Bindu Kala Mandir Presentation, which was directed by Muhammad Hussai. The movie had up and coming B grade actors namely Feroz Khan and Mumtaz in lead roles, with Helen, Rajen Haksar, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ram Mohan, Rajen Kapoor, Tuntun, Bela Bose, B.
