In the past, I have discussed a couple of songs from “Basant” (1942) which is quite an important movie in the annals of Hindi movies, because this movie introduced Madhubala, who then was a young kid and was credited as baby Mumtaz.

We are all familar with the names of music directors whose names figure in the credits of a movie. Sometimes, when one looks closely, one may be able to have a glimpse of the Assistant music director. When I look at the credits of a Hindi movie, I especially look for the screen showing the list of assistants and sometimes I manage to read the name.

I have never heard of a movie called “Roshni” (1949). But that did not prevent me from stumbling upon a song from this movie.

“Khidki”(1948) is a movie starring Rehana and Jawahar Kaul. The songs of this movie are of great historical importance because all the singers who would soon become all time legends sang in this movie.

Many people, including me, may only be aware of “Sargam” (1979), which had some nice songs in them. But there was another movie of this name, viz “Sargam” (1950). This older movie was one of the biggest hit movies of its time and its songs were just amazing.

Among the major contributors in the development of Bollywood mov ie music, C Ramchandra’s name will always figure very prominently. The kind of music that he came up with is simply mind boggling. On the one hand he composed songs based on classical music as well as Indian folk music, and on the other hand he also composed songs based on western music.

I had posted one song from “Basant” (1942) where nine year old Madhubala (then known as Baby Mumtaz) is shown singing a song. What a rare find that was for Bollywood movie buffs !

In Bollywood, if a child has to sing, then most of the time it is a female singer who gives playback for the child.I thought that a child singing for a child actor in Bollywood movies is a phenomenon that started in “Masoom” (1960) and later in “Andaz” (1971), but I find that I was wrong.
