Songs from Artiste Name Films….Second Season….No. 4
———————————————————————
Today’s song is from the film Saadhana-1939, made by Sagar Movietone. The name Sadhana today, immediately brings to mind the face of the famous actress Sadhana, who debuted as a Heroine in the film “Love in Simla”-1960. Her lovely face and unique haircut- which was fashioned in the style of Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn, was carved in the minds of the audience in her heydays. Sadhana was a craze during the 60’s and early 70’s. In this period, according to one source, she was the highest paid Heroine in Hindi cinema.

Today’s song is from a very old film of the 30s decade, ” Industrial India”-38. This is the first song from this film which makes its debut on the Blog.

When the Talkie films started in India, the enthusiasm of the film makers was such that they went on making a large number of films. In the first 10 years ( 1931 to 1940) of Talkie, a total of 924 Hindi films were made, an average of 92 films per year. This created a shortage of stories and film titles. The stories were made on same subjects and even in film titles, we find that some special words were used repeatedly for films. Here, I am not talking about common words like Tere, Mere, Shri, Bhakt, Alibaba, Allaudin, Aurat, Maa etc etc.

Movies, Indian as well as foreign, often deal with characters expressing their love for their beloved. This process is quite straightforward in “English” movies. Boy and girl look at each other’s eyes and then they kiss, and that is all. Or in more elaborate scenes, the boy says, “I love You”, and that is the end of the matter as far as expression of love is concerned.

But there are treasures that are lying hidden far out and deep into this ocean and the only way one can discover them is by going into great depth and diving repeatedly and patiently to come up with goodies.
