(“The Musical Mehtas” – Neena Rajendra Mehta)
In my journey of listening of music and collection of cassettes there was a phase in 1986 when I was introduced to ghazals. I may have been listening ghazals from films but then I was not aware more about this genre and also of the many non-film ghazals already making their foray in the music industry. It was because of my boss who was from Punjab and a great admirer of ghazals that I got to listen to the so many gems from this genre. I was staying at Parli Vaijnath then. It would be appropriate here that I reproduce some part of the text (edited) which I had written earlier in my post for the song “Sarakti Jaaye Hai Rukh Se Naqaab Aahista Aahista” here on the blog which will give a background for today’s article too.

Often repeated, and I will repeat yet once again. The B/C grade films of yesteryears may not have had the fortune or resources to get noticed by the audience and critics, and yet, as one digs into these categories of films for music, invariably one comes up with A grade gems with absolutely A grade music and lyrics. “Haqdaar” (1964) was an archtypically B grade movie where utilisation of resources was kept to the bare minimum, with the result that the names of most artists involved in this movie are unfamiliar. The movie was a production of Shree Ganesh Films. it was directed by P S Wagle and the “stars” of this movie were Ranjan, Ratnamala,Nasreen etc, which I am sure were household names those days- in the households of these artists. 🙂
