Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 8

ROOP REKHA (1948) was a film that I was not aware of until I heard mp3 clip of a song from the film. An advertisement of the film which appeared in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ 1948 revealed that the film was produced by Padam Maheshwari under the banner of Chitrakala Mandir and it was directed by Samar Guha. Veena Kohli and Rehan, probably new comers, were in the lead role supported by Asha Poshley, Smriti Biswas, Durga Mota, Ajmal, G N Butt etc. I have no idea as to which genre the film belonged to but going by another advertisement of the film which says ‘Burning Punjab brings out the challenge picture of 1948’, the story appears to be based on the social impact on Punjab immediately after the partition.

Now we know that a chocolate cake happened. In Cochin. Peevesie’s Mom baked the cake to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the setting up of this blog by Atul ji. And she and her husband shared it amongst themselves. Ah well, I am sure it must have tasted good. It is high time now that digital technology should step up and allow for sending chocolate cakes over email. 🙂 And of course, Atul ji is so busy wrapping up the 10K celebration posts and also doing a lot of travel simultaneously, that I am sure he has not yet seen my message of ‘where is the party?’.

Little is known about this old and obscure movie called “Panchhi” (1944). From the little information available about this movie online, it appears that the movie was directed by Barkat Mehra and that it had Ajmal, Manorama, Hari Shivdasani, Salma, Gulam Qadir, Radha etc in it.

In 1952, this voice came to the fore with the rousing proclamation of “Vande Maatram, Vande Maatram”. This song, which comes from the seminal creation of Bankim Chandra Chatterji – ‘Anand Matth’, was first published in 1882. After the passing of the first war of independence in 1857, the undercurrents of anger and resistance were simmering across the country. But the voices of cohesive and decisive action were still to come a couple of decades later. With the publication of ‘Anand Mathh’, the nation and its people got a slogan that said everything in just two simple words. After this song came on the lips of the common man, over the years many musical interpretations have been pronounced. Most of them are based in classical music, and the most popular versions are gradual and lingering, in the mode of a prayer to the motherland.
