I had thought that Rafi-Lata duets were all posted in the blog. I have looked in the list some years back, trying to find a duet of these two for the Rafi series. Among the old songs of 50’s and 60’s there were none to be found. Only one film in the 60s had a song, which was a mythological movie and the song audio video was very bad. Even then I had saved it but eventually posted that group song from “Kranti” and that was that.

Then out of the blue I saw a duet posted by Sadanand Kamath Sir. Then I realised, that I may not have gone through the whole list, and left the job halfway, losing hope. For once, I gave up too soon.

This nice song is sung by Mohd. Rafi, written by Omkar Varma and composed by Sonik Omi.

The first song of this movie was posted by our Mr. Avinash Ji in June this year.

From the above post we also get to know that ‘Playboy -1975’ is also known as ‘Rangeelaa Mastaanaa’. It was directed by T. Janakiram for ‘Mahesh Movie International, Madras’. It had Roopesh Kumar, Ritu Kamal, Mohan Choti, Fariyal, Hiralal and a host of other artists.

‘Barkha Bahaar’ (1973) was produced by Amar Kumar and his brother, Prahlad Kumar and was directed by Amar Kumar. The cast included Navin Nischol, Rekha, Kamran, Dulari, Murad, Hiralal, Mubarak etc. The film was based on ‘Resurrection’ (1899), the last novel written by Leo Tolstoy. Amar Kumar has directed some good films such as ‘Garam Coat’ (1955), ‘Ab Dilli Door Naheen’ (1957), ‘Rangoli’ (1962), ‘Mere Sanam’ (1965), ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost’ (1968), ‘Pyaasi Shaam’ (1969) etc.

I was not aware of this film until recently. The information about the film is sketchy. I came across an advertisement of the film announcing the release of the film in 1971. However, the film was certified on October 25. 1973 and was released thereafter. This indicates that the film may have gone on the floor some time in 1970, most probably after the box office success of ‘Saawan Bhaadon’ (1970) in which both Navin Nischol and Rekha made their debut.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 15

Back in 2021, I had started this ambitious series for posts to highlight the significant associations in Rafi Sahab’s career. I knew that very few and far between, songs of the major influencers on Rafi Sahab’s singing, were remaining to be posted in the blog, even in 2021.

Most of these stalwarts were old timers, like Naushad, S. D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Chitragupt, Ravi and C. Ramchandra etc. A few of them of them were more contemporary, like R. D. Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, who were with him. They were the latest beneficiaries of Rafi magic, who were ‘faizyafta” till the end, in 1980. Both started in 1966-67 and continued. Even Kalyanji-Anandji was composing songs for Rafi sahab till the end of 70’s. Madan Mohan and Ravi did it throughout his career and till “Laila Majnu” in 1976, and was the only one who started in 50’s and ended and 70’s, apart from Naushad.

Subir Sen, the composer is himself an accomplished singer. This is a different style of composition. A very delicate fashion, of the tune returning to the mukhda in each stanza/antara. Very delicately done, almost like a breeze, and Rafi Sahab is the master, I think it was very easy for him. Having been singing for S. D. Burman for decades by 1972. One wonders if Subir Sen was testing Rafi Sahab if he could do this. One more thing I have noticed that each time the mukhda lines are repeated, the subtle changes in the lines repeating. There is a slight variation even at the end, when whole mukhda is repeated. Almost imperceptible. And again, the end of the song with final line.

‘Chaahat’ (1971) was produced by G M Roshan and was directed by Moni Bhattacharjee. The cast included Mala Sinha, Biswajeet, Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Achala Sachdev, Asit Sen, Sundar, Mridula, Madhumati, Rupesh Kumar, Jhilani, Jayshree T etc. This was the only black and white film in the entire career of Jeetendra and by this, I presume that this film may have taken long time to complete.

It is a surprise as to why Jeetendra signed this black and white film when he started his career as a lead actor in a colour film, ‘Geet Gaaya Pathharon Ne’ (1964). I had recently read two interviews – one by Jeetendra and another by Mumtaz which give me an indication that Jeetendra may have signed the film, ‘Chaahat’ (1971) before the release of his debutant film, ‘Geet Gaaya Pathharon Ne’ (1964).

The year 2025 is ending soon, and a quarter of the 21st century is over. This year has gone by very fast for me, with so much travel. Too much travel in fact that I have lost count. 6 weddings in close family and only one of them in greater Mumbai, which is a record.Mullah ki daud masjid tak, so we travel to Belgaum every time. Add to that visit to UK, plus a visit to Nanded. Another visit to Nanded is due before the end of the year. A 2 day trip to the good old Bangalore. See I forgot the Pune visit for yet another wedding in this melee. Throw in a combining of holiday/relaxation stops to Lonavla and Mahabaleshwar, here you have a full calender.
