Today (4 january 2014) is the 83rd birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy(4 january 1931- 13 october 2004). In the past, I, like many other movie wathers of my time associated her with the roles of hapless mother. Later on, I realised that she had played the roles of leading lady for nearly two decades before she began to play the roles of bhabhi and then maa in Hindi movies.

The 7th song in the series ” Vintage Kishore ” is from film Rangilee-52.
It is an unique song and was a novelty in those days because then such things were not even imagined. This is the First song of Kishore in which he sang in two voices-male and Female. I said ‘First’ because Kishore did this feat once more in the film ” Half Ticket”-1962 wherein he sang Aake seedhi lagi in male and female voices. This ‘Half ticket’ song was posted on this Blog on 8-2-2009. Under the comments of this song I found a comment from Lalitha ji wherein she did mention about an earlier similar song by Kishore. Unfortunately she could not state the film name or the mukhda of the song. Except for this mention,I have not come across anyone who knew about Kishore’s earlier similar song.

Divas of Hindi film music (19) :

Kajra muhabbat waala ankhiyon mein aisa daala,
Reshmi salwaar kurta jaali kaa,
Sharma ke ye kyun parda nasheen
This is the famous Jodi of female singers known for their duets which are popular. They are the venerable Asha Bhonsle and the inmitable Shamshad Begum. When I chanced upon this duet by them from the movie “Chaubees Ghante” (1958), I thought this would be a good inclusion in the series.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan joined the Hindi film industry sometime around mid 1940s as a dialogue writer. His first film as a lyricist was Filmistan’s ‘Do Bhai’ (1947) in which he teamed up with S D Burman and wrote lyrics for all the songs. His next two films as a lyricist with S D Burman were ‘Vidya’ (1948) and ‘Kamal Ke Phool’ (1949). Surprisingly after 1949, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan had no opportunity to team up with S D Burman again. His association with Madan Mohan started in the film ‘Aankhen’ (1950) which continued till 1967 in 12 Hindi films.
