“Izzat”(1937) was directed by Franz Osten for Bombay Talkies. The movie had Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar in lead roles. The movie also had Kamta Prasad, Fateh singh, M Nazir, Ahmad, Mumtaz Ali, K H Dharamsi, Vimla, P F Peethawala, N M Joshi, Ameer Ali, Suneeta Devi, Madhurika, Manohar Ghatwai, Chandraprabha etc in it.

It was because Bombay wahub of business activities in India, because it attracted Talent from all over the country and because the Bombay Government constantly made attempts to develop it as a metropolitan city. Old records indicate that a total of 2.72 lakh people migrated to Bombay in 1911, while this figure was was 4.21 lakhs in 1921 and more than 5 lakh people came to Bombay in 1931 to seek employment.

In the early days of films, it was almost a tradition for the film people to invite or encourage their friends and relatives to join the industry. There could be two motives, One-to give opportunities to the dear ones and Two-to include them in the line so that their own position gets strengthened. Thus, the early artistes-at least the majority- were one way or the other connected to each others in the film line. Those days,Industry too needed people in various branches of film making as it was growing fast and social inhibitions still restricted the entries of people from respectable families.

“Bandhan” (1940) was a Bombay Talkies production. It had Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles in this movie. Suresh, V H Desai, Arun Kumar etc were some of the other actors in it.

Among the Mughal emperors, Bahadur Shah Zafar (24/10/1775 – 7/11/1862) evoked my sympathy whenever I used to read the chapters on Mughal Empire in the history book during my school days. One rarely comes across such a moving tale of a reluctant emperor at a time when Mughal empire had almost crumbled. It is an irony of fate that the last emperor of Muhgal dynasty who had ruled India for over 300 years had to spend the last few years of his life in exile in Rangoon (Yongon) in Burma (Myanmar) and died unsung in anonymity.

I had no much idea about Jahanara Kajjan except that I was aware of a couple of her classical raag based songs in the film ‘Bharathari’ (1944). Very recently, I came across one more of her song ‘tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye ho’ from the film PRARTHANAA (1943). I heard this song for the first time and instantly liked it. The song is rendered in dadra style (crisp version of thumri ) based on raag Gaur-Malhar but with typical filmy musical orchestration of early 40s.

I was very fond of seeing movies and listening to the songs since childhood. Those days, children were not allowed to see films, unlike today (only the other day I saw my neighbour taking his family of wife and 2 sons aged 10 and 14 to see the film “The Dirty picture”. I became sqeamish, but these are current trends). If at all a film was to be seen, the children had to go with their mother, aunt, grandmother or some such female relative and the film would invariably be “Ram Ravan Yudh” or “Bakasur ki Maut”.
