“Laal Haweli”(1944) was directed by K B Lal for Bombay Cinetone, Bombay. The movie had Surendra, Noorjahaan, Ulhas, Baby Meena (later known as Meena Kumari), Maya Bannerji, Yaakoob, Kanhaiyalal, Brijrani, Vatsala Kumthekar, Badri Prasad, Ghori, Alaknanda etc in it.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 45

In the 1940s, Hindi films based on mythological and historical stories were produced among other genres of the film. Minerva Movietone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941) set the benchmark for this genre of movies. The subsequent movies of this genre like ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Draupadi’ (1944)‘, Humayun’(1945), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945), ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ (1945), ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1945), Prithviraj Sanyukta’ (1946), ‘Maharana Pratap’ (1946) etc are supposed to have paled in comparison to ‘Sikandar’ (1941) in terms of grandeur, picturisation of outdoor scenes besides screen-play and dialogues.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 26

Historical events and dramas have been one of the favourite genres of Hindi film makers ever since talkies came into being in 1931. There have been Hindi films made in the 1930s that were based on historical events. Films like ‘Noor Jahan’ (1931), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1932), ‘Prithviraj Samyukta’ (1933), ‘Chandragupta’ (1934), ‘Sultana Chand Bibi’ (1936) and some more were made during this period. I am not aware whether these films were successful at the box office or not. However, I am aware that ‘Pukar’ (1939) and ‘Sikandar’ (1941) were box office hit films belonging to the genre of historical events. I guess that the success of these two films set the tone to produce more films of this genre in the 1940s like ‘Taj Mahal’ (1941), ‘Prithvi Vallabh’(1943), ‘Shahenshah Akbar’ (1943), ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ (1944), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945) ‘Humayun’ (1945) , Shahjehan’(1946), ‘Padmini’ (1948) and many more.

Though I would like to be more systematic in discussing the songs in the blog, I have not been able to put my intentions to practice. One of my aims these days is to discuss a song of 1930s every day in a bid to cover all the available songs of 1930s. Another aim is to cover all the songs of movies. Yet another aim is to ensure that songs from movies as yet unrepresented in the blog are discussed in the blog. Then there are artists nearing their landmarks or artists having their anniversaries and so their songs must be discussed.

Lal Haveli (1944) was a social film produced by ‘Bombay Cinetone’ and directed by K B Lal. It had Surendra, Noorjehan, Ulhas, Maya Banerjee, Yakub, Brijraani, Vatsala Kumthekar, Badri Prasad, Ghory, Kanhaiyalal, Alaknanda and Baby Meena Kumari in its star cast. Music was set by Meer Saheb to the lyrics of Shams Lakhnavi. Nightingale Noorjehan had two solos and two duets with legendry singer Surendra in this film. One of her solos ‘Banti Nazar Aati Nahi Tadbeer Hamari…’ has been already discussed on this wonderful blog.
