“Dulaari” (1949) is a movie which is today fondly remembered as the movie that helped Rafi break into the big league with the song Suhaani raat dhal chuki. Greetings to all on the occasion of Basant Panchmi today, the festival that heralds the onset of the spring season. Although it is still the month of Maagh (as per the Hindu calendar) and the beginning of the month of Pha’gun, which is the month of colors, is still a few days hence, the season of colors and freshness has been initiated. Basant is also a huge celebration with our brethren across the border, and the festival of kite flying and sumptuous food is already in progress since the day before. In Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Kasur and across all of the Punjab, this festival is energetically celebrated as ‘Jashn-e-Baharaan’ (Celebration of Spring) or simply, Basant.

In fact this name was adopted by his family members as their surname the way the desendents of music director Roshan adopted the name Roshan (first name of Roshanlal Nagrath) as their surname.
