In this short write-up, I present a duet song, ‘gulaabi nazaare nazaare gulaabi’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur from an obscure film, ‘Lakhpati’ (1991). It was the only film produced and directed by Jal Baliwala. The film was certified by Censor Board on April 5, 1991, but it could not get the theatrical release. Later, the film was released on VCD. I have given the story of the film in my earlier article while covering the song, nashe mein choor nazar hai mujhe.
The musical composition of at least three songs including the one under discussion gives a feel of the golden period of Hindi film music of 1960s and I am not completely off the mark. Music director, Iqbal Qureshi came into prominence in the 1960s. Lata Mangeshkar was not singing with Mohammed Rafi in most part of 1960s. The song under discussion is a duet of Rafi with Suman Kalyanpur.

‘Professor Ki Padosan’ (1994) was produced by Kant Kumar and was directed by Ravi Tandon and Shantilal Soni. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Asha Parekh, Padmini Kolhapure, Deven Verma, Dilip Tahil, Shekhar Suman, Aruna Irani, Anant Mahadevan, Urmila Bhatt, Abhi Bhattacharya etc. Shoma Anand, Tabassum, Yunus Parvez and Vasant Sena made their specials appearances in the film. Amitabh Bachchan is the narrator of the film who appears at the beginning and the end of the film. This is the last of the films of Sanjeev Kumar which was released on April 29, 1994, about 8 years after his death. This was R D Burman’s second released film after his death, the first being ‘1942, A Love Story’ (1994) which was released a fortnight earlier.

This forgotten beauty is sung by Kishore Kumar. A wonderfully written song by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed by the very talented jodi of Basu Manohari. This hidden gem is from “Jeena Hai Pyar Mein” from 1983.
Jeena Hai Pyar Mein” (1983) was produced by S A Gandhi and directed by Krishna Naidu. The film starred Tariq Shah, Shoma Anand, Prema Narayan, Suresh Oberoi, etc

Hullo Atuldom
Wishing our guiding force; ex-Ranchiwala now-Bhopali Gaanewala, usually addressed as Atulji by the followers of ASAD (acronym for atulsongaday) A Very Happy Birthday. I thank him (as always) for providing us this platform where “birds of a feather flock together”. What started as a place for one post (not necessarily one song though, as some posts contain all versions of a song) a day had become a multi-post per day blog after the initial few months of its journey. 6th February 2022 followers of Indian music, across the genres of Bhav-geet, Film Sangeet, Bhajans and any other that we can think of, lost the most accomplished, sought after, loved (& any other add-ons that we know of) singer. She went by the name Lata Mangeshkar fondly addressed as Lata Didi by the multitude of her followers. She was the go-to voice (a modern day term for first choice) of all music composers for their debut films – remember ‘ghar aaja ghir aayi’ RD Burman, ‘Parasmani’ & its songs which was the first released film of Laxmi- Pyare. Even Madan Mohan is said to have approached Lata Mangeshkar to sing for his debut film ‘Aankhen’ but could get her into the recording room only for his next ‘ Adaa’ which released in 1951.

In this article, I have taken up for discussion an obscure film which had taken a long time to complete. The film had a censor certificate dated April 5, 1991, but it appears that the film did not get a theatrical release. Later, the film was released in the VCD format. I am talking about the film, ‘Lakhpati’ (1991). The film is available for viewing on one of the video sharing platforms.

There are some celebrities who’s birthdays & anniversaries become national events. The media goes crazy in trying to show case their work and remind the film-crazy public about the body of their work, and bring them into public domain. I don’t grudge these celebrities their popularity. All of the concerned actors, actresses, music directors, singers etc have a huge fan following because of their work only.
Then there are those who reach milestone birthdays quietly, without much fanfare. 23rd September happens to be one such date. It is the date of birth of 3 actors whose work I have been following since I started seeing films consciously.

A song from a new movie (by the standards of this blog) for the listening pleasure of followers of this blog.
‘Hungama (The Ruckus)’ is a 2003 release – nearly 20 years old already – that was produced by Venus records and tapes and directed by Priyadarshan. One of the many that Priyan (as his friends in the South address him as) remade from Malayalam hits. It was a remake of Priyans’ Malayalam ‘Poochakkoru Mookkuthi’ (meaning A Nose-ring for the Cat) which was itself a remake of the Telugu movie ‘Gopala Rao Gari Ammayi’ which had elements borrowed from the plot of Charles Dickens ‘The Strange Gentleman’.
