Hullo Atuldom

A song from a new movie (by the standards of this blog) for the listening pleasure of followers of this blog.

‘Hungama (The Ruckus)’ is a 2003 release – nearly 20 years old already –  that was produced by Venus records and tapes and directed by Priyadarshan. One of the many that Priyan (as his friends in the South address him as) remade from Malayalam hits. It was a remake of Priyans’ Malayalam ‘Poochakkoru Mookkuthi’ (meaning A Nose-ring for the Cat) which was itself a remake of the Telugu movie ‘Gopala Rao Gari Ammayi’ which had elements borrowed from the plot of Charles Dickens ‘The Strange Gentleman’.

‘Hungama’ had Rimi Sen, Akshay Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani as the youngsters and Paresh Rawal, Shoma Anand, Shakti Kapoor, Neena Kulkarni, Rajpal Yadav, Tiku Talsania, Upasna Singh, Sanjay Narvekar, Manoj Joshi, Razzaq Khan, etc. and Malayalam film actor Jagadish in a minuscule role of Paresh Rawal’s housekeeper. The movie had music by Nadeem Shravan for songs written by Sameer. Babul Supriyo, Shaan, Sadhana Sargam, Richa Sharma, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam and Kumar Sanu were the playback singers used.

The movie revolved around the confusion caused by two characters having the same name. Both Shoma Anand and Rimi Sen are called ‘Anjali’. Then, the conning of Kachra Seth (Shakti Kapoor) by Anil Singh claiming to be Paresh Rawal’s son Munna Tiwari (Sanjay Narwekar) adds to more confusion. Plus, there is the usual love triangle which gives us romantic songs. But, for me, the highlight in the movie is where Shoma Anand doubts her husband (Paresh Rawal) of having a relation with Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal doubting his wife as her character undergoes a change the minute she lands in their city-home. As if to add fuel to fire Akshay Khanna keeps visiting their house and asking for Anjali (meaning Rimi Sen) which Paresh construes as Anjali (Shoma Anand).

As can be seen from the above, Paresh Rawal was the main character in this movie, just as he was in many of Priyadarshan’s Hindi movies ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Hulchul’, ‘Chup Chup Ke’, ‘Bhagam Bhag’ and a few more, all of which I have seen more than once. Today we are wishing this versatile actor on turning 67 (is he really that old, unbelievable).

Today’s song happens at a party thrown by Anjali (Shoma Anand) for her birthday where both Anjali (Rimi) and Akshay Khanna are uninvited guests. But the husband and wife feel that the other has invited their new ‘friend’ and fantasize the two dancing with their new-friend. Sadhana Sargam and Shaan are the singers who have been invited to entertain the people at the party. A very cute song which is nice on the ears.

Song – Chain Aapko Mila Mujhe Deewaangi Mili (Hungama) (2003) Singer – Shaan, Sadhna Sargam, Lyrics – Sameer, MD – Nadeem Shravan

ye faaslon ka dard kya hai
ye jaanti hai bas judaai

neend aapko mili
mujhe to bebasi mili
aa haa haa hosh aapko mila
muhe to bekhudi mili
phir bhi pyaar

mujhe deewaangi mili
aa haa haahosh aapko mila
muhe to bekhudi mili

Today’s song is from the 1993 movie – ‘Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke’. Music for this movie was composed by Nadeem-Sharvan.

Shravan Rathod of this music duo team passed away recently on 22nd April’2021 (13.11.1954 – 22.04.2021), and as a tribute to him we remember this movie and its songs on the blog.

This movie had six songs composed by Nadeem-Shravan. Five songs have been posted on the blog earlier.

The name of music director duo Nadeem-Shravan will always be remembered for composing some of the scintillating music of the nineties for HFM.
Music of the movie ‘Aashiqui-1990/91’ had created a sensation among HFM fans. It was followed by movies like ‘Saajan-1991’, ‘Sadak-1991’, ‘Deewaanaa-1992’, ‘Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin-1992’, ‘Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke-1993’, ‘Raja Hindustani-1996’,‘Pardes-1997’, ‘Dil Ka Rishta-2003’ and others where this duo composed the music.

I am not a big fan of their music, but I cannot say that I do not their music totally. I like some of their compositions from the movies mentioned above.

However very soon music director Nadeem of the duo had to leave the industry and later made a comeback (giving music virtually, I think).

I had watched some of the movies mentioned above during my stay at Kota (Rajasthan).

‘Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke-1993’ is one such movie which I watched then. I remember I liked this movie very much and I watched it twice or thrice. I also liked the songs of this movie very much.

‘Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke-1993’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Tahir Hussain Enterprises’ & T.V. Films Pvt Ltd. It was produced by Tahir Hussain.

It had Amir Khan, Juhi Chawala, Dilip Tahil, Navneet Nishan, K.D. Chandran, Veeru Krishnan, Tiku Talsania, Mushtaq Khan, Javed Khan, Baby Ashrafa, Sharokh Bharucha, Master Kunal Khemu and others.

Story, screenplay, and dialogues for this movie were written by Robin Bhatt. (Amir Khan is also credited in writing screenplay with Robin Bhatt?).

Editing of this movie was done by Sanjay Sankla.

This movie had six songs written by Sameer and composed by Nadeem-Shravan.

Here are the details of songs of this movie and their date of posting on the blog;

isko paane ki thhi ummeed mujhe

chain jitnaa bhi maine khoya hai
wo meri neend mera chain
mujhe lautaa do
wo mera pyaar mera dard
mujhe lautaa do o
wo mere khwaab
meri yaad mujhe lautaa do
wo meri pyaas wo ummeed
mujhe lautaa do o

Hullo Atuldom

“Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke” (1993) had six songs, four of which are already on the blog as under,

Bambai Se Gayi Poona, Poona Se Gayi Dilli” – a wonderful post describing life at the various “pur”s and one “Nagar” and had 31 comments

Yoon Hi Kat Jaayega Safar Saath Chalne Se” – 3000th day of blog, post by Rajaji

Ghoonghat Ki Aad Se Dilbar Ka” – has a synopsis of the movie

and “Mujhse Muhabbat Ka Izhaar Karta“.

Here is the next one.

It is inside a garment Factory. Aamir Khan (Rahul) is trying to get his sister’s or jija’s factory running so that he can look after his niece and nephew/s who are not in a mood to accept him as their  guardian. To add to Rahul’s troubles the ladies working in the factory are in a mood to ‘rag’ their new boss. The songs were written by Sameer and tuned by Nadeem Shravan. It is sung by Kedarnath Bhattacharya popular as Kumar Sanu.

We are revisiting this movie to remember Tahir Hussain on his birth anniversary (19th September 1938- 10th february 2010) who was the producer of HHRPK (acronym of the movie). Incidentally Aamir Khan (hero of HHRPK) is his son and he was the main lead in two movies of TV Films, Tahir Hussain’s production house. Tahir Hussain, who was the brother of Nasir Hussain (maker of some classics of the 60s, 70s, 80s etc.) has classics like ‘Caravan’ (1971), ‘Anamika’ (1973), ‘Zakhmee’ (1975) etc. to his name as producer. He was the director of ‘Tum Mere Ho’ starring Aamir Khan in 1990.

20th September also happens to be the birth-date of the director of HHRPK -Mahesh Bhatt. He turns 72. He is known for movies that focused on relationships for example ‘Arth’, ‘Saransh’, even his initial ‘Lahu Ke Do Rang’ showed the relation between half-brothers played by Vinod Khanna and Danny almost like ‘Naam’ starring Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt. Mahesh Bhatt movies also had other regular Bollywood masala in it – action, emotion, drama and great music/ songs.

“Dheere Dheere“ –

Dheere Dheere Machal Ae Dil-e-Beqaraar

Dheere Dheere Chal Chaand Gagan Mein

Dheere Se Jaana Bagiyan Mein O Bhanwra

Dheere Se Aa Ja Ri Ankhiyan Mein Nindiyaa Aa Ja Ri Aa Ja

Dheere Dheere Bol Koi Sun Na Le

Dheere Chal Dheere Chal O Bheegi Hawa

O More Sainya Ji Utrenge Paar Re Nadiyaa Dheere  Baho

Pal Pal O Pal Samay Tu Dheere Dheere Chal

Then there are songs have the word in different context, like;

O Gaadi Waale Gaadi Dheere Haank Re

Man Re Tu Kaahe Na Dheer Dharay

And this category of songs cannot be thought of without the superbly melodious “Dheeme Dheeme Gaaun, Dheere Dheere  Gaaun”.

All the above songs are already posted in the blog.  I had actually planned to do a series on ‘dheere dheere’ songs.  I also have plans for a few more such word based theme posts.   But for all these themes I am finding only newer songs.  So the series idea is dropped, will just be preparing random posts for which ever song appeals.

Here I am presenting a song which suits the theme to the ‘T’. Its from the movie ‘Aashiqui’ (1990) which is making its debut here. More than 29 years ago this movie came and the music created a storm. I personally am witness to the rage these songs were. In recent days I have been listening to the songs of this film and I am having to revise my choice of best song in the movie. This song ‘Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana” used to by my favourite and I thought this was the best. But the other songs like the title song “Saanson Ki aroorat Hai Jaise”, “Jaan-e-Jigar Jaan-e-Mann”, “Main Duniya Bhulaa Doonga”,  “Nazar Ke Saamne Jigar Ke Ppaas”, “Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum”, “Tu Meri Zindagi Hai “, “Dil Ka Aalam Ab Kya Sunaaun Tumhen” etc.  Total 9 songs all are chartbusters. At the time this movie came and songs were so popular, it was a known fact that the songs were all from the Music Bank created by T-series (Gulshan Kumar). I think Mahesh Bhatt may have got to select the songs he wanted for his film. That is the only explanation for such high quality melodious songs in one film, when films used to succeed on only one or two good songs. Such was the condition of film music, despite the ghazal already having made a big comeback in Hindi film music. All songs in a film couldn’t be ghazal recitiations like in ‘Umrao Jaan’, so the film makers were making use of the urdu ghazal selectively.

There was at least one song in the above mentioned list which is a direct lift from an existing older song.

The music of the film was by Nadeem-Shrawan, and the singers were Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal. The lyrics are by Rani Malik for this song. The film had newcomers Anu Agarwal and Rahul Roy for hero and heroine, with support cast of Deepak Tijori as the friend, Reema Laagu as the mother, Tom Alter as the warden, among others.

Here is an excerpt of a review on imdb.com :

“Each and every song of this movie is timeless. Nadeem-Shravan may not be creative and experimental like A. R. Rehman, but it is true that if “melody” had a second name it would be Nadeem-Shravan. “Aashiqui”, “Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin”,”Sadak”, “Saajan”, “Deewana”, “Dil Ka Kya Qusoor”, “Salami”, “Damini”, “Dil Waale”, “Raja Hindustani”, “Jeet”, “Pardes” are examples of this genius combination. Mahesh Bhatt is one of the finest filmmakers we had, but it is sad that his biggest commercial success is probably his weakest work as a director, or probably got overshadowed by the lovable music.”

I can’t agree more with the above para. I don’t know the songs of ‘Dil Waale’ and ‘Jeet’ of the above listed films, but can add ‘Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke’ and ‘Dhadkan’ which came much later, to this list. ‘Pardes’ would be the highest point or the culmination of this phenomena called Nadeem-Shrawan.

The music of this film did make a clean sweep of the Filmfare Awards of 1991

Best Music Director : Nadeem Saifi – Shravan Rathod

Best Lyricist : Sameer (For the song “Nazar Ke Saamne”)

Best Playback Singer – Male :
Kumar Sanu  (For the song “Ab Tere Bin”)

Best Playback Singer – Female :
Anuradha Paudwal  (For the song “Nazar Ke Saamne”)

This is the tally of these artists in the blog so far,

Nadeem Shrawan 15
Anuradha Paudwal 35
Kumar Sanu 22
Sameer 30

No wonder that the songs of ‘Aashiqui’ have been rehashed multiple times and reused a couple of times for ‘Aashiqui’ – 2 & 3.  I have come across very very high praise for Nadeem-Shrawan, some go to the extent of calling them SD Burman-ish.  Output wise I am inclined to agree that they were able to maintain a particular standard, which was a difficult task, given the market and commercial requirements.   As for being SDB-ish, I have found a song or two by them to be in the SDB mode.

Anyway, the songs of this movie are on their way to becoming sort of folklore/folk songs in the next century 🙂 🙂 , at the current rate and trends.

Song – Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana (Aashiqui) (1990) Singer – Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Lyrics – Rani Malik, MD – Nadeem Shravan

Lyrics

dheere dheere se
meri zindagi mein aana
dheere dheere se
dil ko churaanaa
tum se pyaar hamen hai kitna jaane jaana
tum se mil kar tum ko hai bataana

dheere dheere se
meri zindagi mein aana
dheere dheere se
dil ko churaanaa
tum se pyaar hamen hai kitna
jaane jaana
tum se mil kar tum ko hai bataana

jab se tujhe dekha
dil ko kahin aaraam nahin
mere hothon pe ek tere siwa
koi naam nahin
apna bhi haal tumhaare jaisa
hai saajan
bas yaad tujhe karte hain
aur koyi kaam nahin
ban gayaa hoon main
teraa deewaana
dheere dheere se dil ko churaana
oo dheere dheere se meri zindagi mein aana
dheere dheere se dil ko churaanaa

tu ne bhi aksar mujh ko jagaaya
raaton mein
aur neend churaai
meethi meethi baaton mein
tu ne bhi beshaq
mujh ko kitna tadpaaya
phir bhi teri har ek adaa pe
pyaar aaya
aa jaa aa jaa ab kaisa sharmaanaa
dheere dheere se dil ko churaana
oo dheered heere se meri zindagi mein aana
dheere dheere se dil ko churaanaa
tum se pyaar hamen hai kitna jaane jaanaa aa
tum se mil kar tum ko hai bataana
dheere dheere se meri zindagi mein aana
dheere dheere se dil ko churaanaa

Greetings to Dear Lord Ganesh on the celebration of His birthday today.
Good wishes of auspiciousness, prosperity and happiness to all readers and friends – may your household be blessed with His presence, today and always.

Lord Ganesh – probably the most recognized representation of the Sanaatan Dharm.  With a form that is like an elephant from neck above, His image is the most easily identifiable, in the entire pantheon of the Gods of our Dharm.  Around the globe, this image with the trunk and ears of an elephant is the most easily associated icon with our country and our belief systems.
