Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 70

The date ten years ago, viz 4 september 2010 saw as many as seven songs discussed in the blog, in ascending order of release of movies that the songs belonged to. The first song of the day was posted as 5 :48 AM whereas the seventh and final post of the day got publiushed at 7:58 AM ! Those were the days when the task of posting seven songs was over before 8 AM !

Planet Earth, the only home we have known so far appears less than a fraction of a pixel in the picture. It’s on this speck of dust like object in the vast cosmos lived every human, plant and animal we ever know and every civilization.
On this planet the greatest men in a wide variety of fields have left behind their legacies both good and bad. Their lives however great or condemnable have been spent here. In the vastness of time and space, a few years spent by great men may mean nothing. However, the legacy left behind by such men are recognized and appreciated for generations.

Thoda Sa Dil Laga Ke Dekh. . .
Film – ‘Musafirkhana’ from 1955, she plays the role Mary, the love interest of Frankie (Johnny Walker). Mary’s mother fancies another match for her daughter, and Frankie is contemplating suicide on that account. As it often happens in films, Mary breaks out into a song, trying to lift up Frankie’s dying spirits.
1958 – she plays the role of Nargis, the bosom friend of Sheela (Nutan), in this confused and comic scenario of mixed identities and true love – ‘Aakhiri Daao’. Funny to note that Nargis is her real name. And casting credit lists her assumed name. Always life is so interesting.

What a find – this song. A lovely tuneful song, sung by Asha Bhosle, and on screen performed by Sheila Ramani. Aah yes, the memorable danseuse of those lovely lilting songs of ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954).
The film is ‘Aawaara Ladki’ from 1967. The Geet Kosh carries very limited information for this film, in the print volume IV. The production company is listed as Skyland Productions, Bombay. The music director is Dhaniram. Two songwriters are listed – Rajnikant and Kaif Irfani. This song is penned by Kaif Irfani.

Ravi was the music director. Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist. This duet is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Manna Dey. ‘Aankhen’ was released in 1950. Most people remember it for being the debut film of music director Madan Mohan. Amongst all the wonderful songs that caught the attention of the listeners, there is this lovely melody in the voice of Meena Kapoor, that really steals away your heart – “Mori Atariya Pe Kaaga Bole, Mora Jiya Doley, Koi Aa Rahaa Hai”. For me, it is this one song that makes this film and its music memorable. This is one of the two songs that Bharat Vyas wrote for this film.
