There are many songs in the movies that are for the children, and many of them are sung by children. Then there is another set of songs wherein bachpan (childhood) is being bid a goodbye and there is a welcome to youth, of the ilk “Ja Ja Ja Mere Bachpan, Kahin Jaa Ke Chhup Nadaan” from movie ‘Junglee’.

The super Manna Dey song from Aashirwaad, 1968. Lyrics are by Gulzar and music is by Vasant Desai.
The lyrics of this song are just superb, very characteristic Gulzar poetry, use of very simple words, communicating a very profound ideas. The lines “saans ki dori chhoti pad gayee, lambi aas dagariyaa” is such a warm and touching thought, said so simply.

The movie, Yaadein (1964), is an Ajanta Arts production directed by Sunil Dutt. This movie is a superlative theatrical experience, and one of its kind, at least in the era to which it belonged. This movie is a very daring experimental endeavor created by an actor/producer/director of mainline cinema, for the mainline audience. And yet it is an off-beat movie, of the first water. And believe me, nothing can get more off beat than this.

I have been discussing the songs of “Parbat Pe Apna Dera” (1944) these days. This movie is a treasure of songs that have been forgotten with time, but which deserve to be much better known. And the fact that the artists singing these songs are those who were active in the pre golden era of Hindi movies, make these songs even more valuable.
