Rafi Sahab’s legendary associations: 01

Rafi sahab’s association with Vasant Desai started in 1949 with ‘Nai Ta’aleem” and “Narsimha Avtar” and continued till the very last music score by Vasant Desai in Shaque (1976)(Ek dil hai ek jaan hai (Shaque)). Vasant Desai’s active career as a music director is just a bit longer, from 1942 to 1976.
I think this is the first time I am writing a post for a song composed by Vasant Desai. I heard of Vasant Desai in childhood, when my mother used to talk about how he had died in an accident caused by faulty lift, whenever a song from films like Goonj Uthhi Shehnai, Jhanak Jhanak Paayal baaje or Guddi, would play on radio.

This movie which was mainly about dancing, had Sandhya, Gopi Krishan, Keshavrao Date, Madan Puri, Manorama, Chandrakanta, Mumtaz, Chaube Maharaj, Nana Palsikar, Nimbalkar, Chaman Puri, Bhagan, Jayshree Gadkar etc in it.

As a simpleton, I thought that Deepawali is a one day festival which is celebrated on amawasya day. Now I realise that Deepaawali begins two days in advance, namely on tryodashi (or teras). This day is popularly called Dhanteras. Next day viz chaturdashi is Narak Chaturdashi aka Chhoti deewaali. Next day, viz amawasya is the day of Laxmi pooja, and it is the real Deepaawali day. Next day, the first day of next lunar cycle, is Govardhan pooja. Next to that is Bhai dooj. That is not all. On the sixth day after Deepaawali is Chhat, a very important festival in Bihar.
I am not the only simpleton. There are others. For instance, there are people who think that Govardhan pooja has something to do with Gobar (cow dung). 🙂 Not really, Govardhan pooja is pooja of Govardhan parvat, the parvat that Lord Krishna lifted to protect Gokulwasis from severe rain.

Today’s song is from the film Jeewan yatra-46. This film was made by Rajkamal. The film was a social film, directed by Master Vinayak and its music was composed by Vasant Desai.
V Shantaram left Prabhat films or rather was compelled to leave it, because he broke a rule of Prabhat Films. Soon after When the company was founded, one of its directors S Fattelal had married one of its lead actresses Gulab Bai aka Kamla Devi (one who is seen bending in the Prabhat Logo). After this, the team of partners/directors made a rule that if, in future, any of them falls in love with an artiste of the company or gets married to her, he will have to leave the company. After a few years, Keshav Rao Dhaiber, one partner, married Prabhat’s Heroine Nalini Tarkhad. He had to leave the company,in 1938.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 41

Today 19th July 2020 is the thirteenth birthday of this blog. I wish Atul ji, Sudhir ji, our seniors and all team members on the blog a very happy birthday of the blog today and my greetings and best wishes to all on this occasion.
Ten years ago, on this day i.e. on 19.07.2010, four songs were posted on the blog. And they were posted in a pattern which I liked when I became a member of the blog and also this was a regular pattern in those years i.e. 2012 to 2014 (I think).
