Chalo na gori machal machal ke

on:This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
And so, yesterday as I was conversing back and forth with Harish ji Raghuvanshi (resident of Surat, compiler of the ‘Mukesh Geet Kosh’) regarding information on the lyricist SH Behari, we started to discuss the general topic of hugely talented lyricists that spent a very small time in the industry, contributed a small number of very wonderful songs and then somehow did not work anymore for Hindi films. Their filmi careers are lost under obscurity.
We talked about a few such names, and then Harish ji mentioned Madhukar Rajasthani. And the name really tickled my fancy, for I remember with a tingle, a large number of songs, all non-filmi, that are my favorites from the days of listening to radio. A wonderful array of songs and bhajans by Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood, Mohamed Rafi, Hemant Kumar and others, that are on my list of favorite non filmi songs, are all written by Madhukar Rajasthani.
As I searched for the films for which Madhukar Rajasthani has written the lyrics, so far I could come up only with two names. One is the 1965 film ‘Jahaan Sati Wahaan Bhagwaan’ with music by Lala-Asar-Sattaar. Madhukar shares the lyrics credits with BD Mishra, another lesser known poet. Then the other film I could locate is the 1953 production ‘Madmast’ with music by V Balsaara. The lyrics credits are shared with two more poets – again very unfamiliar names – Maanav and JC Pant. Two songs from the 1965 film are already represented on this blog, whereas the film ‘Madmast’ still has to make a debut here. (Hopefully soon 🙂 ). Interesting to note that in the film ‘Masmast’, Madhukar Rajasthani has used a pseudonym ‘Madhuraj’, a name made from the first part of the two words in his name. I will do some more research on this very expressive poet, and follow up with more write ups soon.
For now, let me present this oh so lovely piece of music – the words so beautiful, so sublime, are by Madhukar Rajasthani. The music, such a lovely but soft pace, comes from the baton of Khaiyyaam. And the voice – CH Atma. More so in this song as compared to many others, CH Atma does sound very close to Saigal Saab. Just listen to the phrase – “Chalo Na Gori”, and it will simply take your heart away.
Enjoy this superb and lovely creation – a coming of age song that so beautifully captures the fading away of adolescence and the appearance of the first signs of youth. It is just lovely.
chalo na gori machal machal ke
abhi to baalapan hai
chaand si surat, prem ki moorat
paaon mein jhaanjhan hai
O fair damsel
Pray do not walk with such a flair
Your face shines like the moon
Your presence is like the love personified
The anklets are on your feet
(They make a very pleasing comely sound)
halke halke paaon dharo tum
man ki umangon mein na baho tum
komal tera mann hai
Pray, o dear
Do tread softly
Hold back, do not let yourself
Flow with the flights of the mind
Your heart is soft and innocent yet
kali se tere hontth raseeley
chupke se koi ras na pee ley
bhanwaron ka madhuban hai
Your lips are succulent honey
Like new born buds
Be wary someone tries not to partake
This garden is full of creatures seeking nectar
kaun na chaahey prem ki kaliyaan
sabko bhaayen pee ki galiyaan
par ye raah katthin hai
Who does not fancy the blossoms of love
Every damsel wishes
For the comfort of a lover’s abode
Alas, but this path is so fraught with difficulties

This is best song by CH Atma in my opinion. I listen to it several times. You can visualize ‘Gori’ and the lover as you listen to this song. I have been trying to find lyrics on this one for a while and found it here.
Wonderful site.Thanks.

I am a musician. I mainly play and listen to Western music. I am beginning to grasp the vastness of music from all over the world. This song is a also a Gem, a Classic. Each time i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes, the melody moves me and the arrangement is superb and what lyrics.

Sudhir ji,
MADHUKAR RAJASTHANI is known more for his non filmi geets rather than his film songs.his songs were sung by stalwarts like Rafi,Manna Dey,mukesh,C.H.Atma,Talat mehmood,Hemant Kumar and Asha Bhosale.Mohd.Rafi’s “suniyo araj hamari, prabhuji” is the most famous geet.
MR was born in Churu district of Rajasthan. He was a very reserved person and never ever went to anybody asking for work. That is the reason in his 30 years in filmdom,he wrote only for 22 small budget films, songs totalling to hardly 100.His first song came in 1950 for BHED,composed by Mukul Roy.
Then came deepak,Madmast,Diwali ki raat,gokul ka chor,Sangram,Jahan sati wahan Bhagwan,Sailab,Arabian nights,Shamaheer,Shri Ram vanvaas,Mahashakti,Sheesham,Do Bahadur,Flying horse,Rahul,Sant Tukaram,Tarzan and circus,Hunterwali,Seeta swayamvar,Gunah ki raat and laxmi pooja.
As you said,he used Madhuraj also sometimes. In ‘Seeta Swayamvar’-76,he sang 4 songs also along with Mahendra Kapoor.he wanted to produce”Meerabai” with Meena kumari, but before that only he left this world.

Arun ji
Thanks for the list of films for Madhukar Rajasthani. Given the paucity of information available, I am impressed that he wrote for as many as 22 films. And with the large number of non film songs, I am sure we should be seeing a century for him too, at some time.
Interesting to note that he also sang in one film. I will try to locate the songs. You mentioned that he wanted to produce “Meerabai” with Meena Kumari. But Meena Kumari pre-deceased him by many years (she had passed away in 1972). So his plans for the film would have been a let down, more because of Meena Kumari’s departure.

sudhir ji,
After your above post,I realised that ‘ but before that only SHE left this world’ was typed as HE left this world,by not printing ‘S’.
This also made a different meaning altogether.
