Ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda

Posted on: September 9, 2008

“Dil ek mandir” is one of those musical blockbusters that were common in 1950s and 60s, where almost every song would become very popular and even evergreen.

I have heard this song “ruk jaa raat thahar ja re chanda” many times, often without knowing which movie the song is from. I have never seen the movie, and I had not seen the video of the song either till recently.

But the song itself paints a vivid picture which every listener can visualise in his/ her minds eyes in technicolour, that is how well Lata has sung this song. I have always found this song incredibly romantic and sensuous, all that by just listening to this song, and the way Lata has sung it.

To the present generation, the picturisation of the song may appear to belong to the dark ages, but we have to keep it in mind that the movie was made in 1963, nearly 35 years ago, when women in India were regarded as charnon ki daasi to her husband and was supposed to touch his feet, serve him like a servant etc.

The song itself is quite modern by the standards of India during that period. Shailendra has excelled in writing this song, as he always did. Shankar Jaikishan, the music director has got the best out of Lata. Here is one song that shows that like Madan Mohan,Shankar Jaikishan too could get the most out of Lata in those days. The fact that Lata was at the peak of her singing prowess during that time certainly helped matters.

song- Ruk ja raat thahar ja re chanda ((Dil Ek Mandir) ( 1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda
beete na milan ki belaa
aaj chaandnii ki nagarii mein
armaanon ka melaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda
beete na milan ki belaa
aaj chaandni ki nagri mein
armaanon ka melaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda

pahli milan ki yaadein lekar
aayi hai ye raat suhaani
pahli milan ki yaadein lekar
aayi hai ye raat suhaani
dohraate hain phir afsaane
meri tumhaari prem kahaani
meri tumhaari prem kahaani
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda
beete na milan ki belaa
aaj chaandni ki nagari mein
armaanon ka melaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda

kal kaa darnaa kaal ki chinta
do tan hai man ek hamaare
kal kaa darnaa kaal ki chinta
do tan hai man ek hamaare
jeevan seema ke aage bhi
aaungi main sang tumhaare
aaungi main sang tumhaare
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda
beete na milan ki belaa
aaj chaandni ki nagri mein
armaanon ka melaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chanda
beete na milan ki belaa
aaj chaandni ki nagari mein
aramaanon kaa melaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chandaa
ruk jaa raat thahar jaa re chandaa

This is an excellent song from a very good movie.
If I am not mistaken, Dil Ek Mandir was re-made from a Tamil movie (or made into a Tamil Movie). Definitely a Tamil director.
Those days, Rajendra Kumar used to act in a fair number of movies made by South Indian producers. Gharana, Sasuraal, Humrahi come to mind.

Anyway, this movie is full of very good songs. Yaaden na jaaye beete dinon ki & hum tere pyar mein saara aalam…
