Ae baadal jhoom ke chal

Posted on: October 18, 2008

Here is a Mukesh song with a difference. Yes, it is not a sad song. It is a happy song.

This song is from a by now forgotten movie called “Naadaan” (1971) and it was picturised on Navin Nischol. This song was reasonably popular at that time. But as I have repeatedly mentioned, 1971 was the year of bumper crop of outstanding songs, and many nice songs found themselves edged out in popularity stakes. In other less competitive times, the same songs would have fared much better.

Though this song failed to make any headway in Binaca geetmala 1971, there is little doubt that this song was, and continues to be a nice song to listen to.

Song- Ae baadal jhoom ke chal (Naadan) ( 1971) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

ai baadal
ai baadal
jhoomm ke chal
zameen ko choom ke chal
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
zameenn ko choom ke chal
mausam mahkaa-mahkaa hai
dil bahkaa-bahkaa jaaye
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
zameen ko choom ke chal
mausam mahkaa-mahkaa hai
dil bahkaa-bahkaa jaaye
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
chal chal chal chal

kyaa rang-rangeeli waadi hai
ye dhoop chamakti chaandi hai
kyaa rang-rangeeli waadi hai
ye dhoop chamakti chaandi hai
is apne watan se ho is apane chaman se
ik preet ki dori baandhi hai
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
zameen ko choom ke chal
mausam mahkaa-mahkaa hai
dil bahkaa-bahkaa jaaye
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
chal chal chal chal

jhonkaa jo hawaa kaa aataa hai
Khushboo ko churaakar laataa hai
jhonkaa jo hawaa kaa aataa hai
Khushbuu ko churaakar laataa hai
titli bhi dole o bhanwraa bhi bole
jharnaa bhi taraane gaataa hai
haay ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
zameen ko choom ke chal
mausam mahkaa-mahkaa hai
dil bahkaa-bahkaa jaaye
ai baadal
jhoom ke chal
chal chal chal chal
chal chal chal chal
chal chal chal chal

I remember this movie being released – and its review in the Illustrated Weekly.

I don’t think it did very well at the box-office. The Weekly’s review was also just average.

But that does not take anything away from this song. Nice, pleasant song it is.

I think this was just after Jaikishen’s death. After his death, a lot of Shankar’s music (still under the S-J banner) was quite ordinary, leading many people to say that Jaikishen was the brain behind the duo and that Shankar was finished without him.

Indeed there was some very average stuff that came out but I believe it was a combination of many things including the fact that Rafi, Shammi Kapoor were out by then and that Shankar did need some recovery time from losing Jaikishen.

He did come up with some beauties – Lal Patthar being foremost among them.

I think Nadaan was after Jaikishen’s death.

Shankar never recovered from Jaikishan’s death. Even Raj Kapoor deserted him ( and Mukesh) and signed up Laxmikant Pyarelal in his next movie.

Till about 1972 or so, Shankar Jaikishan tunes continued to be hummable. Remember “Andaaz” ?

It was after this that Shankar was reduced to work as a music director in forgettable C grade movies.

Shankar Jaikishan had 17 releases in 1971 which was the highest for them ever. They were trying to play the number game with LP and winning when tragedy struck.

This movie was released in Aug 1971 a month before Jaikishan died. It was mostly done by Jaikishan for his friend Deven Verma who was the producer.
