‘Jal Mahal’ (1980) was produced by R K Soral and was directed by Raghunath Jhalani. The cast included Jeetendra, Rekha, Deven Verma, Rajesh Behl, Pran, Manmohan Krishna, Jagdeep, Chand Usmani, Jayshree T, Sundar, Janakidas, Brahma Bhardwaj, Viju Khote etc. Padmini Kapila, Om Shivpuri and Arpana Choudhary made their special appearance in the film.
The film is loosely inspired from Alfred Hitchcock’s English thriller, ‘Vertigo’ (1958) insofar as the basic structure of the plot is concerned. In both the films, the protagonist falls in love with a woman who apparently commit suicide. He later meets her ‘look-like’ in a different place. In both films, criminal conspiracy is the common angle – murder for inheritance But the approach to criminal conspiracy is different. In ‘Vertigo’ (1958), protagonist’s psychological weakness is exploited whereas in ‘Jal Mahal’ (1980), protagonist’s romantic weakness is exploited by the antagonist. ‘Vertigo’ (1958) is a psychological thriller with a tragic end. ‘Jal Mahal’ (1980) is customized with ingredients for box office success with happy ending making it a romantic-suspense thriller.
The story of the film under discussion is as under:
Devender Pratap Singh (Pran), the public prosecutor, is the owner of Jal Mahal for which he has appointed Shankar (Deven Verma) as a caretaker who stays with his wife (Arpana Chaudhary). Devender, his wife Shanti (Chand Usmani) and their son, Ravi (Jeetendra) a lawyer stay in Udaipur. Ravi visits Jal Mahal every weekend to meet Shankar, being his close friend. He tells Ravi that there is a history of a girl who committed suicide in Jal Mahal for not allowing her to marry the boy of her choice. Since then, people do not visit the place in the night due to fear of her ghost roaming around the palace.
On one of the visits to Jal Mahal, Ravi notices a woman roaming inside the Jal Mahal complex in the night and singing a song. He follows her and catches her by hand when she is about to jump from Jal Mahal to commit suicide. She does not reveal anything about her except her name as Namita (Rekha). Next day, Ravi takes her in his car to drop at her place. However, in the halfway through journey, she gets down from the car and vanishes. After a couple of days Ravi sees Namita with a group of hippies smoking chillum. He drags her out of the group to take back home but she runs away in a horse cart.
Next day, Namita is in the session court along with a police constable, who is enquiring her about the lawyer who will defend her case for drug abuse. At that time, she sees Ravi and requests him to become her lawyer. He agrees on one condition that she should give up joining hippies. Ravi successfully presents her case before the judge who, because of her honesty in telling the fact, releases her from the charge, being the first timer. Ravi counsels her that there are many people in this world who are having problems but they do not fall to drug abuse to forget about the worries. With the passage of time, Ravi comes to know that she has lost both her parents. Ravi and Namita become close to each other and they decide to get married. He gets approval for the marriage from his parent.
Rajesh Thakur, whose family had some feud with Devender many years back, visits his office inviting him, his wife and Ravi to a party being hosted by him on his 4th marriage anniversary. Despite family feud, Devender agrees to attend the party with his family. At the party, Ravi is shocked to see Namita being introduced to him as Rajesh’s wife. He ridicules her for her emotional cheating and leaves the party halfway. Namita tries to contact Ravi over the phone but he refuses to talk to her.
After a couple of days, Shankar takes Ravi in a boat in the guise of a visit to a client in the midst of a lake where Namita is already waiting for him. Namita explains to Ravi that circumstances which forced her to marry Rajesh who was eyeing on her parents’ wealth. He has been mistreating her every day. So, one day she ran away from him and landed in Jal Mahal to commit suicide when Ravi had saved her. Just to forget her trauma, she even joined a hippie group and got into drug abuse. Ravi assures her of his love for her. He gives her shelter in his Jal Mahal until he works out her divorce formalities.
But Ravi’s action creates not only a serious rift between the father and the son, but it also revives the family feud between Rajesh and Devender. Rajesh has started mistreating Namita for her parent’s wealth. One day, she visits his office requesting him to save her from Rajesh. But Ravi cannot help her immediately until he files on her behalf the divorce papers. After not getting a positive response, Namita rushes to Jal Mahal. Ravi follows her and watches her jumping from the terrace to fall in to the lake. Ravi reports to the police station and records his statement.
After few days, the body of Namita is found in almost unrecognisable condition. Rajesh identifies Namita dead body which is cremated later. After Namita’s death, Ravi gets detached from the world. His father, Devender fixes his marriage with the daughter of the police commissioner. However, on the engagement day, Ravi leaves the house with a note to his father that he is going away to attain the peace of mind. After wandering for few days, Ravi lands in an ashram where Dindayal (Manmohan Krishna) gives him the shelter as a hermit. During a spiritual assembly in the ashram, Ravi is shocked to find Namita as a hermit who identifies herself as Gayatri. Her ‘look like’ face of Namita revives his love for Namita and he treats Gayatri as Namita. This makes Gayatri uncomfortable.
When things is about to go out of hand, Dindayal reveals to Ravi that once upon a time, he was a big and wealthy businessman in Mumbai and his daughter’s name was Rekha (Rekha). One day, he and his daughter were on a holiday on Madh Island, when Rajesh has met him to sign some contracts. The rest of his flashback is mainly connected with how the unusual circumstances made him to kill a man who was trying to assault his daughter, Rekha and how Rajesh forced them to escape from Mumbai to avoid the police pursuing the killer of the man. But Rajesh started blackmailing him which forced him to get Rekha married to Rajesh. To evade from Rajesh, Rekha assumes a new name Namita. But Rajesh traces her and takes back to his house. It is at this time, Namita tries to commit suicide when Rajesh who has come with his legal wife emerges at Jal Mahal, He prevents Namita from jumping into the lake and instead push his wife to fall in the lake. The idea is to become the inheritor of his dead wife’s property. Once again using the blackmailing techniques, Rajesh forces them to flee which bring them to Ashram. She becomes a hermit assuming a new name, Gayatri.
After getting the true identity of Namita/Gayatri as Rekha, Ravi goes to Gayatri’s room where he finds her missing. She has been kidnapped by some criminals who are blackmailing Rajesh to expose him about killing of his real wife whose name is Namita in the guise of suicide of Namita, Ravi’s fiancée to grab his real wife’s wealth. The criminals and Rajesh come to a deal in which Rajesh will give them Rs. 5 lakhs against handing over Rekha to him. In the meanwhile, Ravi returns from Ashram to Udaipur along with Dindayal and reveals the entire story to Devender.
After getting a definitive clue as to who were two kidnappers of Rekha, Devender is surprised to know that one of the kidnappers was none other than Ravi’s friend and the caretaker of Jal Mahal, Shankar who was double crossing both Ravi and Rajesh to earn money. The greed of earning more money made him to plan the kidnapping of Rekha.
Devender disguises himself as a kidnapper waiting for Rajesh to handover him Rs. 5 lakhs. As soon as Rajesh arrives, Devender pounces upon him and Ravi joins to pin him down. Devender had already called a police team to remain as standby who take control of Rajesh. However, in the climax, Rajesh gets loose from police and runs away. Ravi follows him. He climbs to the terrace of Jal Mahal where Ravi continues to chase him. Finally, Rajesh loses his balance and falls into the lake from the same place where he had pushed his wife into the lake. Ravi and Rekha/Namita/Gayatri unite.
The film had five songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by R D Burman. The film makes its debut on the Blog with its first song, ‘dekh raha hai koi aaj dinon ke baad’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar singing for Rekha.
The context of the song is that Ravi (Jeetendra) discovers at the party hosted by Rajesh Thakur (Rajesh Behl) that Namita (Rekha) is already married to the host. A heartbroken Ravi completely shuns her, believing her to be a cheat and playing with his emotions. However, Shankar (Deven Verma) arranges Namita’s meeting with Ravi without the latter’s knowledge. At that meeting she reveals that she has been trapped in a marriage with Rajesh as he is eying on his real wife’s wealth which he gets after hi kills her and put her in her place as his wife. She has been subjected to his cruel behaviour. Ravi has now understood her predicament and decides to be with her. She sings ‘joie de vivre’ song expressing joy and the emotional relief when she sees Ravi gazing towards her after so many days.
