Hullo Atuldom
October 10th, 2026 is the Krishna Paksha Amavasya in the Ashwin month of the Hindu calendar (Vikrama Samvat) This Amavasya is also called Mahalaya Amavasya, a significant day of Pitru Paksha. Also known as SARVA PITRI MOKSHA AMAVVASYA, this day allows you to perform rites for all ancestors collectively, including those whose precise death dates are unknown or whose individual shraddha days were missed. It marks the end of ancestor remembrance period and the beginning of Sharad Navratri/Durga Puja celebrations i.e. transition to Devi paksha.
The nine day-long Sharad Navratri festival begins from 11th October with the Ghatasthapana & Maa Shailputri Puja. The festival concludes on October 20, 2026 – Tuesday which is Vijayadashami also called Dussehra. Here is Wishing one and all Best Wishes for Navratri; better to say “NAVRATRI KE SHUBH KAAMNAYEIN”.
It is a good day to have a song which has the heroine singing a song, asking Lord Shiva’s help in curing her husband who is possessed by the spirit of a woman who’s love he had refused. The song is written by Kavi Pradeep & composed by R. D. Burman with Lata Mangeshkar’s playback. The song is from “Mangalsutra” (1981)
‘Mangal Sutra’ was directed by B Vijay for Gaurav Films International, Madras. It was produced by Ravi Kumar. It had Rekha, Anant Nag, Prema Narayan in the main cast with Jagdeep, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Rajendranath, BM Vyas, Chand Usmani, Jayshree T, Meena T, etc. in supporting cast. Shashi Puri makes a guest appearance in the movie. And this movie introduced Master Vineet.
The film was a remake of the hit Kannada horror movie “Naa Ninna Bidalaare” (1979). Actor Anant Nag played the lead role in both the films. “Na Ninna Bidalaare” is regarded as one of best horror films of all time in the Kannada film industry.
This movie had total five songs penned by Kavi Pradeep (one song) and Nida Fazli (four songs). Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Lata Mangeshkar and S. P. Balasubramaniam had given their voices to the songs in this movie. The blog has one song from the film (post by Avinashji).
Recently, the National Film awards (for the year 2024) were awarded by the President of India. The awards are bestowed for excellence in the world of Indian cinema, across languages, in all categories related to filmmaking. Plus, the government of India also bestows the Dadasaheb Phalke award to an artist for his /her contribution to Indian cinema.
This year Shri. Anant Nagakatte – known popularly as Anant Nag- received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (for 2024). He has been active in films since 1971. He has acted not only in Kannada films but also Hindi (11 films), Telugu (6 films), Tamil, Malayalam & (Indian) English (1 each). The English film that he has acted in was ‘Stumble’ directed by Prakash Belawadi, set in Bangalore.
Watching Anant Nag receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award triggered memories of having seen him as a handsome businessman & brother-in-law to Rekha’s character, in the Shashi Kapoor produced & Shyam Benegal directed, ‘Kalyug’ (1981). That memory brought me to ‘Mangalsutra’ (1981) which had Anant Nag and Rekha as the main protagonists.
This film came at a time when Rekha had reinvented herself and was having a successful run with films like ‘Khoobsurat’, ‘Umrao Jaan’ and a horde of films with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Vinod Mehra, Vinod Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor etc. She had made her debut in films (as an adult though she was still a teenager) in 1969 through ‘Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D. 999’ (a Kannada film) and 1970 (in Hindi, ‘Sawan Bhadon’). She had been cast as heroine to actors who were on the other side of 40 and had been in the industry since the early 1960s, in her initial films; though Navin Nischol (her first hero) was, a relatively, younger actor. At that time, film reviewers scorned her looks, but complimented her confidence and comic timing in ‘Sawan Bhadon’. It is a wonder she survived all of that, with no support from any GODFATHER or GODMOTHER in the industry. Her own father- Gemini Ganesan- was a big name in South Indian films; but that didn’t help, and Rekha also didn’t use it to gain any leverage. Though her career has gone through certain periods of decline, Rekha has gained a reputation for reinventing herself numerous times and has been credited for her ability to sustain her status.
Rekha has been acknowledged as one of the finest actresses in Indian cinema, she has starred in more than 200 films and is the recipient of several accolades, including one National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards. In 2010, the Government of India honoured her with Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour.
I am a huge fan of hers and I am sure, anyone who knows me, knows this. With this post we are also Wishing the young chulbuli lady on her birthday. Of course, the song with this post does not show her chulbuli side, for that we need to see the other songs from the film, but the song does show how good she is with intense emotional scenes.
Cannot believe she has been entertaining film audiences for close to 68 years (she had acted as a child actor in a Telugu film in 1958)
