Ni Sultana re pyaar ka mausam aaya

Posted on: November 20, 2008

This song was one of the earliest songs that left an indelible mark in my tender mind. I could identify the voice of Rafi even those days, but the concept of lyricists and music directors was not yet known to me at that time.

It is only now that I have realised that the song was from “pyar ka mausam” and was in fact the title song of this movie, seeing that the phrase “pyar ka mausam” appears in the lyrics. R D Burman, who was seeing a meteoric rise as a music director had composed the music and Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the lyrics in this movie.

And this song was picturised on Shashi kapoor and Asha Parekh. Frankly, I never knew that these two had acted together in a movie. I have always thought that Asha ji acted opposite Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Rajesh Khanna in most of her movies.

Coming to this song, it is Rafi who undoubtedly steals the show. He sings this song with gutso and enthusiasm that infects the listeners of this song even today.

I have now seen the video as well. Dancing was never the strong suit of Shashi Kapoor, and I must say I was not much impressed with his dance. Even Asha ji was not a renowned dancer. And I think this is one of the rare songs where Asha ji is shown dancing, well sort of. Overall, I think that this song is better listened to than watched. And in fact that is how this song earned its fame, sheerly on the quality of its audio.

This is one of the earliest songs I remember in my life, having seen the movie at a very young age.
I agree with you – this song is better on audio than video.
The background in the story is that there is a competition between Shashi and Asha, i.e, who will attract those tea-pickers with his/her singing. You can see a scene in the song where Shashi tries to bribe them.
Btw, Asha will get offended if she hears that you think she was not known for dancing. 🙂 She was very much known for dancing – in fact she was proud of it. That is why in movies like Ziddi and I think Love in Tokyo she has classical dance numbers. I think she even has a dance school in her name.

Thanks for providing the background of the song, and such a good song.

Keep it up 🙂

first of all let me thank Avinashji for reloading the video of this song. otherwise i would not have read the post that Atulji has written to go with the song as i was not at introduced to this blog at the time when this song was posted.
Atulji! i take offence (being a fan) to the statement that Asha Parekh was not a renowned dancer. 🙂 she was a good dancer. remember the song from “Meri Soorat teri Ankhen” https://atulsongaday.me/2008/11/11/naache-man-mora-magan/comment-page-1/#comment-105679
and also in “Love In tokyo” https://atulsongaday.me/2009/06/26/koyi-matwaala-aaya-mere-dwaare/comment-page-1/#comment-105681 she has had various dance sequences in movies.
ok i agree she is not in the same league as Vyjayanthiamla or Waheeda Rehmaan or even Hema Malini. but it is said that she was discovered for her first movie at one of her first bharat natyam dance recitals when she was just in her teens.
ok now you will say that i pulled you up jsut as when i did when you had not recognised Madhubala afew years back

Hi All: Please correct the lyrics: it is NOT Balam Babua Bedardi but in fact it should read Vilambh Ko Aao Bedardi (listen to the song and compare it with what I have written here). The word Vilambh means late as Asha want the Tea Pickers to come Late, so that Shashi loses the bet. But he bribes them and wins. And of course this is still a GREAT song.
