I have listened to this song many a times. I was aware that the song is sung by Hemant Kumar, but that is all I knew.
I stumbled upon this song yesterday, when I played a VCD containing Hemant Kumar songs.
Thanks to the VCD, I came to know that the song was from a movie called “Ek Hi Raasta” (1956). When I played the video, I was in for a big surprise. I found that this is a dance song. A dance guru sings this song and a lady dances on it.
And pray who is the lady ? I did a double take and rubbed my eyes in disbelief. Was I really watching Meena Kumari dance with a smile ? Of course I was.
In this song, Meena Kumari dances with such cuteness and grace that cannot be expressed in words. I am always happy to see Meena Kumari play happy roles. “Ek Hi Raasta” was a movie of 1956 when Meena Kumari had not yet caught the tragedy bug. And thank goodness for that.
In this song, the music guru is singing this song, and Meena Kumari dances gracefully on it. And she makes very good use of her sari ( forming pallu, aanchal, ghoonghat etc with it).
In the midst of the song, a small kid ( her son in the movie ?) comes back from the school and watching her dance, tries to ape her. On noticing that, she grabs the tiny tot by his ear and shows him the door, all in one motion without missing a dance step. Wonderful !

I never knew this song was a dance song, with Meena Kumari in it. Yes, it is good to see her smiling and dancing, just as she did in “Na bole na bole …” from Azaad.
Hemant Kumar is his usual smooth self, perfect for chayageet.

This is a nice song. There is another good song on a bicycle in this movie.
Btw, this movie is considered a landmark film in Indian cinema.
It was a B R Chopra film – and his first with Sunil Dutt. (The partnership of course went on to give us some of the finest films of all-time).
