Hamko man ki shakti dena

Posted on: January 31, 2009

This is a prayer from “Guddi” which was the debut movie of Jaya Bhaduri and who had played the title role in this movie.

The picturisation shows Guddi ( a school student) late for the morning school prayer. She hurriedly reaches the prayer hall and sheepishly stands in the rear of the gathering. In Indian schools, prayers are required to be sung with closed eyes, but as most school going kids know, opening the eyes when the teachers are not looking is great fun.

And so Guddi opens her eyes, and finds that the teacher leading the prayer from the podium is looking at her (with open eyes, of course). The teacher beckons Guddi to come to the podium. So Guddi reaches the podium after the first para of the prayer is already over.

She starts singing the prayer from the second stanza. This sudden change of voice startle the students, and a few of them surreptitiously open their eyes to find Guddi miraculously there on the podium. Relieved, the students close their eyes again, like good students that they are all supposed to be.

This song in fact became so popular that many schools actually adopted it as their school prayers. It was written by Gulzar and sung by Vani Jairam. Vasant Desai was the music director.

As one can guess, this song is one of the better known prayers that were created in Bollywood movies.

Song-Hamko man ki shakti dena (Guddi) (1971) Singer-Vani Jairam, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics

Hamko manki shakti dena man vijay karen
Hamko manki shakti dena man vijay karen
Hamko manki shakti dena

bhed bhaav
Hamko manki shakti dena man vijay karen
Hamko manki shakti dena

mushkilen paden to hampe itna karm kar
mushkilen paden to hampe itna karm kar
saath de to dharm ka chale to dharm par
saath de to dharm ka chale to dharm par
Hamko manki shakti dena man vijay karen
Hamko manki shakti dena

When my dad bought a cassette player for the first time (it was one of those Sony ones), we got a cassette made with a mix of songs.
The first song on that cassette was this one (hum ko man ki).
Followed by “bol re papihara”.
And then “mera jeevan kora kaagaz”.
Followed by “deewaane hain deewanon ko” (you should post this one too Atul – very nice song and picturisation).

Would this song be considered a bhajan? I am wondering what the difference for you between a “prayer” song and a bhajan is…just curious 🙂 It is really a beautiful song from a lovely film…

One of my favourites and one of the few songs that I remember my Music teacher teaching me in my primary school. It is now the turn of my daughter in school to sing and was hence looking for the lyrics. What a song and how meanigful. Atul, can you also translate this to English so the non-Hindi understanding crowd can also understand. Hats off!

I wouldn’t call this a bhajan since this has no reference to spirituality, but a way to lead oneself. If one were to follow this, I suppose God will be with you without you even praying Him!

its d prayer at my workplace ;)..sang it few minutes back 😛

Atul, btw if u want d english translation, u may let me knw so tat it benefits ur readers 😀

My school prayer! Back then I figured EVERY SCHOOL had same ‘prayer’.:)
