Saawan ke maheene mein

Posted on: February 4, 2009

Like most people, I too thought that “Sharaabi” was a movie of 1984 with Amiabh Bachchan and Jaya Prada in it and with the music of Bappi Lahiri.

There was another movie by this name in 1964. It had Dev Anand in it and its music was by Madan Mohan.

Here is a song from the older “Sharaabi” (1964). The song “sawan ke maheene mein” has been sung by Rafi wonderfully well. What is more, it has two versions, viz slower ( sad) and faster (happy) version.

Apart from a drunk song, I feel it is a “chayageet” kind of song as well, and also a song that is apparently a favourite with fauzi bhais ( military personnels).

Song-Sawan ke maheene me (Sharabi) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics
(slow version)

sochta hoon piyun piyun na piyun
chaak daaman siyun siyun na siyun
dekhkar jaam
kashmakash me hoon
kya karoon main
jiyun jiyun haay na jiyun
saawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene mein
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
saawan ke maheene me

chand ki chaal bhi bahakti huyi
raat ki aankh bhi sharaabi hai

saari kudrat nashe mein hai jab su
are maine pee li to kya kharaabi hai
saawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene mein
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
saawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene me
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
saawan ke maheene me

——————————–
(faster version)

lalalala
lalalalalala
lalalalala
Sawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene mein
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
Sawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene mein
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
saawan ke maheene me

he he he
barson chalkaaye maine
ye sheeshe aur ye pyaale
barson chalkaaye maine
ye sheeshe aur ye pyaale
kuch aaj pila de aisi
jo mujhko hi pee daale
har roz to yun hi mai dil ko bahka ke pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoo
saawan ke maheene me

lambe jeewan se achcha
wo ik pal jo apna ho
lambe jeewan se achcha
wo ik pal jo apna ho
us pal ke baad ye duniya
kya gham hai agar sapna ho
kuch soch ke aisi baaten
ghabra ke main pee leta hoon
do char ghadi jee leta hoon
sawan ke maheene me

he he he
maikhaane me aaya hoon
mausam ka ishaara paake
maikhaane me aaya hoon
mausam ka ishaara paake
dam bhar ke liye baitha hoon
rangeen sahaara paa ke

saathi jo teri zid hai to
sharma ke pee leta hoon
do char ghadi jee leta hoon
Sawan ke maheene mein
ik aag si seene mein
lagti hai to pee leta hoon
do chaar ghadi jee leta hoon
saawan ke maheene me

hey, this one is my two-cassette (yes I still have loads of those!) set called “The Best of Madan Mohan”.

Sawan ke mahine main from Sharabi was Madan Mohan’s favourite composition. He would sing the song for his friends at private gatherings. Perhaps he identified with the lyrics. As you may be aware he had his own battle with the bottle from all the frustrations of his movies not succeeding at the box office despite fabulous music.

Thanks for this interesting trivia.

Suggested corrections in the lyrics (faster version):

1. 2nd para, 8th line- the word “mai” is wrongly placed at present, it should be between the words “ke” and “pee”, down the line.

2. Last para, 1st word: It is “saaqi” and not “saathi”.

Thanks. Please delete the comment after it has served its purpose.
