So gaya saara zamaana

Posted on: February 4, 2009

In most cases, the reel life that actors essayed on screen had little resemblance with their real lives. But in some cases, viz for Guru Dutt and Meena Kumari, their real lives followed their reel lives. Both of them played melancholic roles towards the later half of their careers, and their real lives proved to be no different. In fact, they both had tragic melancholic ends to their lives.

And that is a great pity, considering that both of them started their careers playing happy bubbly roles.

If time machines were in use these days, I would go back in time and change the course of their lives in such a way that they would continue to act in happier roles.

In case of Meena Kumari, I will ensure that she continued to act in movies like “Ek hi raasta” and “Miss Mary” and would not touch her subsequent melancholic roles with a barge pole.

I have watched “Miss Mary” and what a feel good movie this was. The movie was brimming with positive energy.Hero of the movie was Gemini Ganeshan- father of Rekha. It had Kishore Kumar in a light hearted role. And of course, it had Meena Kumari in a wonderful role.

Here is a beautiful romantic song on a moonlit night ( “Chayageet song” by my definition) from this movie which was sung by Lata and was picturised on Meena Kumari. Rajinder Krishan wrote the lyrics whereas Hemant Kumar was the music director.

Only if Meena Kumari had confined herself to such movies and such songs !

Song-So gaya saara zamaana (Miss Mary) (1957) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin
so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin
ae hawa jaakar use tu
saath kyun laati nahin
so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin
so gaaya

chaand pahle bhi nikalta tha
magar aisa na tha
chaand pahle bhi nikalta tha
magar aisa na tha
aaj aisi baat kyun hai
kuchh samajh aati nahin
so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin
so gaya

chandni kuchh chaand se kahkar zameen par aa gayi
chandni kuchh chaand se kahkar zameen par aa gayi
jaane kya dekha yahaan ab laut kar jaati nahin
so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin
ae hawaa jaakar use tu saath kyun laati nahin
so gaaya saara zamaana
neend kyun aati nahin

Meena Kumari looks lovely in this scene. What a pity she took to all those depressing roles later and allowed herself to sink into that depression. One could say the same for Guru Dutt, in whom we lost a great talented mind. At least Dilip Kumar was smart enough to get out of that frame of mind after his early stint with tragic roles, or else we would have lost one more talented actor.

The song is beautiful and definitely the chayageet type.

Miss Mary was a lovely movie.

I think her depression was set on early in her life as she was forced into films as Baby Meena: she her self would have preferred to go to school. It is sad really.

When you think of the accolades that she received in her lifetime as an actress, it is really terrible to think what she herself perceived in her own words:

um kya karoge sunkar mujhse meri kahani
Belutf zindagi ke kisse hain pheeke pheeke
Why do you want to listen to my story:
Colourless tales of a joyless life

I think she was once nominated for filmfare best actress for 3 films in the same year: and thinking there were people like Waheeda, Nargis, Nutan, Madhu/Vyajantimala etc, it its quite an achievement!
