Baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi
Posted on: February 8, 2009
There have been quite a few memorable songs in Bollywood movies covering various aspects of Indian weddings. There have been baraat songs, there have been bidaayi songs etc. In fact some movies viz “Aapke hai kaun” allegedly was nothing more than a video of a wedding.
There have been some memorable bidaai songs in Bollywood movies. Quite a few of these songs have been sung by Rafi. I have posted one song viz “chalo re doli uthaao kahaar” in this blog. I have not yey posted theiconic “babul ki duaayen leti ja” so far. Here is another bidaai song sung by Rafi.
The movie is “Umang” which was no great shakes except its music. And the best song from this movie was arguably this song.
Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist whereas Shankar Jaikishan composed the music for this song.

Song-babul kaun ghadi ye aayi (Umang) (1970) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
saajan ka jab aaye bulaawa
koyi na baadha maane Raadha
saajan ka jab aaye bulaawa
koyi na baadha maane Raadha
tod ke pinjda ud jaaye chidiya
roye bhale shehnaayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
Babul kaun ghadi ye aayi
solah baras toone god khilaaya
baanhon me lekar jhoola jhulaaya
solah baras toone god khilaaya
baanhon me lekar jhoola jhulaaya
gale lagaaya aaj na kyun jab
gale lagaaya aaj na kyun jab
meri huyi bidaayi
baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi
peehar se jab doli jaaye
duniya heere moti lutaaye
peehar se jab doli jaaye
duniya heere moti lutaaye
lekin main aisi badkismat
aansoo dahez me laayi
baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi
kal thi main teri laadli beti
ho gayi aaj paraayi
baabul kaun ghadi ye aayi

Believe me Mr. Atul. I woke up today morning while singing this song.
My wife also accompanied me when heard it.
Now I am sure that “Whatever We think of; You have it”

This is the only song by Rafi in this film and the first one with music by Shankar Jaikishan with Kishore Kumar as the main singer in the movie in which KK was not acting. In Pre-Aradhana era.

This is one song in which one gets to see the amalgam of actors of bygone era with the new breed of actors at that time :
Rehman, Kamini Kausal, Nadira, Durga Khote, Manmohan Krishna (old timers) and Subhash Ghai, Archana, Satish Kumar, Akaashdeep, Paintal, Suresh Chatwal, Asrani, Meena T.( new generation)
Sanjeev Kumar was having guest appearance, I guess.
The film was directed by Atmaram, Guru Dutt’s younger brother.
By the way, lyrics of this song was written by Neeraj and not by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Very nice bidaai song.
Thanks for posting this, Atul.
Btw, Subhash Ghai also acted in this movie as part of the NFDC troupe. You can see him in this song.
