“Manoranjan” was a movie based on “Irma la douce”. Shammi Kapoor, the brain behind this movie, did not realise that the topic of this movie was far too alien for desi taste, and moreover, India audiences had yet to mature to appreciate any kind of music that was even slightly off the mainstream.
The movie flopped, but as often happens with flop movies, this music of this movie was a saving grace.
R d Byurman was the music director and Anand Bakshi had written the lyrics. Here is a popular song from this movie which was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. It was a typically fast R D Burman number and it was not an easy song to sing by any means, but the two singers sang it wonderfully well.
The song was picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Zeenat Aman and on many others.

apne saath teraa haath thaam ke

nahin re nahin main nahin jaaungi
tere saath teraa haath thaam ke
nahin re nahin main nahin jaaungi
tere saath teraa haath thaam ke
thaam ke
la la la
la-la-la
aise na rooth baaton baaton mein
waade na tod aisi raaton mein
aise na rooth baaton baaton mein
waade na tod aisi raaton mein
dekhaa hai chand mulaaqaaton mein
dhokaa hai yaar teri baaton mein
dekhaa hai chand mulaaqaaton mein
dhokaa hai yaar teri baaton mein
hamen is tarah na thukraa zaalim
aashiq hain ham tere naam ke
hamen is tarah na thukraa zaalim
aashiq hain ham tere naam ke
ui ui nahin re nahin main nahin jaaungi
tere saath teraa haath thaam ke
aayaa hoon main tujh ko le jaaungaa
apne saath teraa haath thaam ke
thaam ke thaam ke
la-la-la
ye maanaa tu meraa deewaanaa hai
tu har ek shammaa kaa parwaanaa hai
ye maanaa tu meraa deewaanaa hai
tu har ek shammaa kaa parwaanaa hai
ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai …
wo apnaa aur ye begaanaa hai
meri jaan khoob pahchaanaa hai
wo apnaa aur ye begaanaa hai
meri jaan khoob pahchaanaa hai
jaa re jaa re tere jaise
beimaan bewafaa mere kis kaam ke
jaa re jaa re tere jaise
beimaan bewafaa mere kis kaam ke
he aayaa hoon main tujh ko le jaaungaa
apne saath teraa haath thaam ke
ui ui nahin re nahin main nahin jaaungi
tere saath teraa haath thaam ke
thaam ke thaam ke
la-la-la

I was blacklisted by my teachers in VI Std for singing the song “Goyake Chunanche” (they were selecting 1 person from each class) because the song was deemed, in a hushed tone, indecent and improper (I hadn’t seen the film).
Nowadays I know it is more because the film was “BAD” as prostitution was shown in a lighter way .
Instead they chose a boy who sang “Jai jai shiv shankar..” so presumably drinking bhang and getting high with your boyfriend was decent and allright!!!
P.S. the boy had a lovely voice and sang very well:)
