Meri jaan meri jaan

Most mainstream movies of 1960s and 1970s were not complete without a cabarat song. And Helen was the first name that came to a movie makers mind while thinking about a cabarat. Similarly, the first name that a music director thought of for singing such songs was Asha Bhonsle.
Apart from Helen, there were a few others too who were staking their claims on the cabarat scene. And one of the leading candidates was Bindu. Her cabarat dance in “Kati Patang” (“mera naam hai Shabnam”) is easily one of the most well known cabarat songs of all time.
Here is a cabarat song from “Man ki Aankhen”(1970) which was a movie with Dharmendra and Waheeda Rahman in lead roles.
Just as this cabarat dance has Bindu and not Helen, this song is sung not by Asha Bhonsle, but by Lata. Yes, Lata those days was singing some fantastic cabarat dances and was giving Asha Bhonsle a run for her money in this genre of songs.
The song though begins with the voice of Manna Dey, who sings for a few anonymous guys who dance with Bindu in this song.

Lyrics
lalalala lalalalala
lalalalalala lalalalala
lalala lalalala
meri jaan meri jaan
dil garmaati
sau balkhaati
chali aa chali aa
meri jaan
aankhen sharaab ke
chhalke chhalke paimaane
aankhen sharaab ke
chhalke chhalke paimaane
saanse ghulaab ke
mahke mahke afsaane
hai
mere shabaab ke
mehfil mehfil deewaane
aankhen sharaab ke
chhalke chhalke paimaane
meri jaan meri jaan
dil garmaati sau balkhaati
chali aa chali aa
meri jaan
daawat hai bekhudi ki har ik nigaah mein
kaahe pukaarti hain aa jaa panaah me
daawat hai bekhudi ki har ik nigaah mein
kaahe pukaarti hain aa jaa panaah me
ye shokh raaten khona naa
jaagi aankhon sona naa
aaj gaafil hona naa kahti hai ye jawaani
kabhi daaman ke daagh ko bhoole se bhi dhonaa naa
yaa meri jaan meri jaan
dil garmaati sau bal khaati
chali aa chali aa
meri jaan
wo hi maze mein hain jo aashiq mizaaj hain
kal kuchh nahin hai pyaare jo kuchh hai aaj hai
wo hi maze mein hain jo aashiq mizaaj hain
kal kuchh nahin hai pyaare jo kuchh hai aaj hai
is waqt ko thukraana naa apne ko tarsaanaa naa
dekh ab sharmana naa kahti hai ye jawaani ye
do din bahaar hai phir peechhe pachhtaana naa
do din bahaar hai phir peechhe pachhtaana naa
meri jaan meri jaan
o saansen ghulaab ke
mahke mahke afsaane
haayi
mere shabaab ke mehfil mehfil deewaane
aankhen sharaab ke chhalke chhalke paimaane
dil garmaati sau balkhaati
chali aa chali aa
meri jaan

I did mention once in my blog too about cabarets sung by Lata…she sung in black&white days a few and later in color too…most famously I remember the ones from Night In London.
