Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hello Hello ji

Posted on: August 16, 2009

Telephones may be ubiquitous and affordable these days, but they were regarded as a luxury item in India till just two decades back. Getting a telephone connection took as long as getting a ration card or a gas connection in India of yesteryears.

So whenever I watched a telephone song in Bollywood movies, where hero and heroine were seen singing on phone, I dimissed such songs are “filmy” i.e. unrealistic. Telephone calls those days were prohibitively expensive and telephone department actually lectured people to be brief while using the phone. And today there are advertisements by telephone companies urging their potential customers to keep talking on the phone as long as they could. How times have changed.

Here is a telephone song from a 1962 movie called “Bombay ka chor”, when telephones were actually prohibitively expensive and they were found only in the homes of well heeled. In this song, Kishore Kumar phones Mala Sinha and sings a song which is romantic, teasing, playful, comical etc, all at the same time.

Rajinder Krishan, who has written great iconic songs of several genre, comes up with this nice and witty song. People may recall that the telephone song “mere piya gaye Rangoon” was also written by Rajinder Krishan. Music director is Ravi, creator of iconic songs himslef, as I am so fond of saying about him.

It is a nice and lovely song that will certainly cheer up its listeners and watchers.

Song-Hello hello ji (Bombay ka Chor) (1962) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

hello
hello
hello
Hello hello ji
kaho kya hai ji
pyaar ki sikha do mujhe A B C
suno suno ji
jaldi kaho ji
bacche ho na batein karo pyaar ki abhi
haay haay haay
Hello hello ji
kaho kya hai ji
pyaar ki sikha do mujhe A B C
lalalala
lalalala
lalallalala

kyaa karoon jab neend na aaye
baithe baithe dil ghabraaye
kyaa karoon jab neend na aaye
baithe baithe dil ghabraaye
aaya kyun nahin rakh lete
jo lori dekar tumhe sulaaye
waah re jawaab nahin
bhool na jaana kahin
kal se naukri pe chali aana ji
hoy
suno suno ji
jaldi kaho ji
bacche ho na batein karo pyaar ki abhi
hello hello ji
kaho kya hai ji
pyaar ki sikha do mujhe A B C

dekho mere ghar mein bhi hai
ek jagah bearer ki khaali
dekho mere ghar mein bhi hai
ek jagah bearer ki khaali
ham to husn ke naukar thahre
bearer rakh lo chaahe maali
hoga na koi aisa
dheeth tumhaare jaisa
pyaar ki lutiya dubo ke rakh di
waah waah waah
hello hello ji
kaho kya hai ji
pyaar ki sikha do mujhe A B C
he
suno suno ji
he
jaldi kaho ji
arre
bacche ho na batein karo pyaar ki abhi

chhodo chhodo ab ye gusaa
kar bhi lo kuchh pyaar ki baatein
chhodo chhodo ab ye gusaa
kar bhi lo kuchh pyaar ki baatein
maine kab tumne chhedi thi
khud hi ye taqraar ki baaten
chodo ji ab gile
phone pe dil mile
pyaar se kah do ab to goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji
goodnight ji

Isn’t that “Phone pe dil milein”?

Yes, “phone pe dil mile” makes sense. I have now changed the line accordingly.

Thanks. Fantastic song, by the way! Only Kishore could have done justice to this on-screen (same as “C-A-T Cat, Cat Maane Billi” or “Chil Chil Chillaake Kajri Sunaaye”).

Thank you Atulji for posting this song
heard it for the first time this morning on Radio Ceylon. and came here to check it out.
i was always fascinated by the lengths of the telephone cables in movies, and look how Mala Sinha is playing with it.
infact even chords of microphones used by crooners in movies were super long. 🙂
