“Boyfriend”(1961) is a little known movie that had Shammi Kapoor and Madhubala in it ! And Dharmendra too !
I have posted a few songs from “Boyfriend” (1961), but I was not aware of this song. This song is picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Madhubala. Shammi Kapoor is seen teasing Madhubala here. The harassed Madhubala boards a rickshaw and goes away, but the pesky Shammi Kapoor is not one to be easily shrugged off. He follows her in a bicycle.
Listening to the song is a new experience, since the voice is not Rafi’s. No, it is not Manna Dey’s voice either. It somehow sounds a bit like Hemant Kumar’s voice, but it is not Hemant Kumar either. Digging a bit ( a euphemism, as I had to dig deeper), I found out that the singer is Subir Sen.
So it is a good trivia question for music buffs, viz. name all the playback singers for Shammi Kapoor in Bollywood movies. People will say Rafi, and guess the usual names like Manna Dey, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar etc. Some may even say Shamshad Begam ( and be right too), but I do not think too many people will be able to associate the name of Subir sen as a playback singer for Shammi Kapoor.
The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. And there are no surprises there.

Yes, it is definitely a surprise, since I would never have associated this song with Shammi Kapoor! He sounds like a mix of Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey, and I remember some of his songs from the 50’s and the 60’s, some very nice ones at that. Wonder what happened to him?

In the song book of the film, this song is accredited to Shailendra and not Hasrat Jaipuri.

This is such an eye opener,oops I mean ear opener. I could only recall Subir Sen’s title song from Aas Ka Panchhi (1961).
