Hoke rocket pe sawaar aaya aaj teraa dildaar

Posted on: February 18, 2010

Love songs in Bollywood movies have often used “Chaand” to good effect. In such songs, “Chaand” symbolised beauty, what with female face being compared with “Chaand” (moon) and chaandni (moonlight) being used as a romantic backdrop for some memorable songs.

Even for kids, Chaand was Chanda Mama (Chanda uncle).

Songs where moon was thus depicted remained popular and common till 1960s. But then mankind reached moon and “Chaand” was no longer the same in Bollywood songs.

Instead of being associated with tender feelings, Chaand began to be associated with rocket.

There was this movie called “Chaand ki duniya” (1959) which showed chaand for what it was, viz an object associated with rocket. I am not aware about the story of this movie, but it could well be about moon populated by living beings. Perhaps in this movie the hero lived on earth and the heroine on the moon.

My guess is based on the lyrics of this song where the hero talks of riding on the rocket to arrive at the moon to meet his beloved.

This new age song is sung by Rafi and S D Batish. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. S D Batish himself is the music director (under the name of Nirmal Kumar). This name of Nirmal Kumar was suggested to him by Lata.

S D Batish sometimes used the name of master Ramesh as well while composing music. Not just that, he sometimes wrote lyrics too (under the pen name of Rasik). These are indeed interesting and less known facts that is shared by S D Batish’s son on youtube.

Here is this wonderful song from this movie called “Chaand Ki Duniya” which I had not heard before. It is a “chaand” song with a difference.

ae jaane jaahaan koi baat nahin
tujhe dhoondh hi lengen kahin na kahin

dekhe laakhon hi dildaar
tumsaa ek nahin sarkaar
dekhe laakhon hi dildaar

dharti kare gagan se pyaar
