When we look back at the past, we tend to wear rosy glasses and look back into the past only selectively. The past is not always all that glorious, as we tend to believe.
Most movies and their songs gloss over the harsh realities of day to day lives and prefer showing only a make believe world in them.
“Mr Sampat” (1952) was a light hearted movie that looked at the real life of real people. This movie contained a biting sarcasm on the state of affairs of freshly independent India. Most songs of this movie are songs that take a sarcastic look at things. Here, this song expresses the woes of an ordinary household.
Those were the days of scarcity in India and black marketeers and profiteers had a field day who capitalised on it. Prices of items were rising and common man had a hard time making both ends meet.
And it is interesting to note that India was considered overpopulated even then, when the population was only one third of what it is today ! Infrastructure was non- existent and the few school/colleges/ institutes that existed had limited seats to cope up with the need of the public and “house full” was a reality not only in movie halls, but elsewhere as well.
This song is a lovely song that shows that people more than 50 years ago faced too problems in their day to day lives. This song provides an intereting glimpse at their lives.
This song is a wonderful song which is sung by Geeta Dutt, Jikki Krishnaveni and P B Srinivas. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music direction was by E Sankar Sastry and B S Kalla.
