Sarkaay lyo khatiya jaada lage

Posted on: February 21, 2010

Bollywood music touched its nadir in 1980s when “Disco” music took over the music scene. The fact that Bappi Lahiri and Mithun da were the biggest beneficiary of that era says it all. Bappi Lahiri (though capable of creating great music) preferred to create forgettable music. Mithun da indulded in so called disco “densing”, which, if you watched closely, bore little resemblence to actual “densing”. “Densing”, incidentally was how Mithun da pronounced “dancing”.

When 1980 gave way to 1990s, we were subjected to a different brand of movies. It can be called David Dhawan movies. These movies had Govinda, Karishma Kapoor (lead roles) and Shakti Kapoor (hero’s side kick, with his trademark danging “naada” ).

Believe it or not, I found such movies such a refreshing change from the disco “densing”. Govinda, unlike Mithun da, could actually dance, and looked like he was dancing and looked like enjoying it too.

When I watched “Raja Babu” (1994) in a movie hall, I liked the movie. I found it a wonderful comedy movie with songs to match.

But when I read the media reaction, I found that the media was up in arms against this movie for its “poor” taste which was against Indian “culture”. Though the media panned the movie, the aam janta lapped it up. I , part of newspaper reading “intellectual” 😉 decided to join the intellectuals and began to look down upon this movie.

Now, some 15 years later, when the coast is clear, I have decided to switch sides as well and decided to come clean. Despite what the media maintained (and maintains), I have liked the movie.

The song from this movie, that was singled out as the most “shining” example of “bad ” taste, was the one that I had liked the most. Yes, I am talking of the song “Sarkai lyo khatiyaa jaada lage”. This song singlehandedly popularised the word “khatiya” (cot) among every section of the society, wheras this word was known only among rural population of Hindi speaking regions, where “khatiya” (also called Charpoi) is used.

Frankly, I see all the brouhaha about this song being in poor taste was unwarranted. The song is a light hearted song, so what if the song has sexual innunendo in it. “Sarkaay lo khatiya jaada lage” (pull the cots closer as I am feeling cold) and other such words may not be appropriate for younger minds, but then who said that Bollywood movies must always be targetted at juveniles ? There should be movies meant for grown ups, there should be movies on adult themes, there should be movies on thought provoking topics etc. And in case the topic is not appropriate for a particular section of population, they should not watch the movie. I find it ridiculous that people would want to pass judgements on matters that they cannot understand or appreciate.

If you let your hair down and wear your “tapori” hat, then you are bound to enjoy this song. And I certainly enjoyed this song when I watched it in a movie hall.

This song is sung by Kumar Sanu and Poornima. Sameer is the lyricist and Anand Milind composed the music. The song is picturised on Govinda and Karishma Kapoor.

This song is a legendary song of its time which the low brow section of the population heartily enjoyed. This song too is an iconic song of sorts. 😉

garmi mein maathe se tapke paseenaa
garmi mein maathe se tapke paseenaa
bhaaye na baarish kaa tip tip maheenaa

padne lagi hai kadaake ki sardi
haan padne lagi hai kadaake ki sardi
kitnaa sataaye hai mausam bedardi
padne lagi hai kadaake ki sardi
kitnaa sataaye hai mausam bedardi
aise mein kaise sahen ham judaai
aise mein kaise sahen ham judaai
baahon mein leke odhaa do rajaai

sarakaay lyo takiyaa jaadaa lage
sarakaay lyo takiyaa jaadaa lage
sarakaay lyo takiyaa jaadaa lage
jaade mein balma pyaara lage
ho sarkaay lyo khatiyaa jaadaa lage
sarakaay lyo takiyaa jaadaa lage
sarkaay lyo khatiyaa jaadaa lage
sarakaay lyo takiyaa jaadaa lage
