After working as assistants to Music directors like Hemant Kumar etc, Kalyanji Veerji Shah became a full fledged music director in the later half of 1950s. He gave music in a few movies under the name of Kalyanji Veerji Shah before he was joined by his younger brother Anandji Veerji Shah and then they formed the highly successful duo known as Kalyanji Anandji.
“O Tera Kya Kehna” (1959) was a movie where Kalyanji was on his own. Here is a lovely song from this movie. This song is a trivia buff’s delight. It is a duet which is sung by the unusual pair of singers, viz Subir Sen (who sounds much like Hemant Kumar) and Kamal Barot. The actors on whom the song is picturised are no less unusual. The song is picturised on Mehmood and Chitra.
The song is written by Indeewar.

Song-Dil leke jaate ho kahaan (O Tera Kya Kehna) (1959) Singers-Subir Sen, Kamal Barot, Lyrics- Indeevar, MD-Kalyanji
Lyrics
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
hamto khade hain yahaan
kya hai tumhaara
jisne pukaara
usi pe dene lage jaan
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
hamto khade hai yahaan
kya hai tumhaara
jisne pukaara
usi pe dene lage jaan
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
dekh reshmi baahen
ham to bhool gaye raahen
tadpa gayi bahka gayi
teri nasheeli nigaahen
kapde saaf dil mailaa
banke phirte ho chhaila
maaloom hai
hamen chaal ye
kyun jaal rahe ho phailaa
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
hamto khade hai yahaan
kya hai tumhaara
jisne pukaara
usi pe dene lage jaan
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
sun lo kahte hain tumse
rootho na aji hamse
ye husn ki tab shaan hai
ham dil waalon ke dam se
tujhse pyaar ho kaise
aitbaar ho kaise
badle puiya tera jiya
mausam badalta jaise
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
hamto khade hain yahaan
kya hai tumhaara
jisne pukaara
usi pe dene lage jaan
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
ham to khade hain yahaan
kya hai tumhaara
jisne pukaara
usi pe dene lage jaan
dil leke jaate ho kahaan
Atul really relished this song after a long time.Subir Sen started with good songs especially from Aas ka Panchi- Dil mera ek aas ka panchi, udta hai unche gagn mei.
Kamal Barot had a tantelising duet song with Lata mangeshkar in 1963 in Parasmani. Haasta hua nurani chehera. This one song sent the dou of Laxmikant Pyarelal into climax.
I have heard this song before, and knew it the minute the song started playing. What a pity this song has been languishing all these days, forgotten in some unknown corner until you unearthed it. Very nice song, and Subir Sen has such a good voice. It is a pity his career never took off the way it should have.
Patterned after “Main rangeela pyar ka raahi” from Chhoti Bahen which also had Subir Sen singing Mehmood. Early Kalyanji used to pattern songs after SJ.

Both singers there after were lost.
