Ae jaane chaman tera gora badan

Posted on: April 25, 2010

It is not uncommon for me to enjoy songs whose details are not known to me and most other people. These well known songs are often from movies that few people know about.

Take this song “Ae jaane chaman tera gora badan” for example. Everyone must have heard this song. But any idea about the name of the movie that this song is from ?

I too was unaware about the details of this song. It is only recently that I have come to know that this song is from a movie called “Anmol Moti” (1969). And needless to say, the name of this movie did not ring a bell. Furthur investigation reveals that the movie had Jeetendra and Babita in lead roles. How time flies ! These days, we have their children (none of who were even born back then) who are into showbiz now a days.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor. All these days I thought that Rafi was the singer of this song. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is by Ravi.

This song in fact supports my observation that a large number of great songs that we enjoy listening to (without being aware of its details) could well be creations of Ravi.

Song- Ae jaane chaman tera gora badan (Anmol Moti) (1969) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan,MD-Ravi

Lyrics

ai husn-e-bekabar, tujhe takne ko ek nazar
jhukta to hoga roz tere ghar pe maahtaab

ae jaane chaman
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman

malmal ke jism itna bhi
paani mein mat nahaa
malmal ke jism itna bhi
paani mein mat nahaa
dar hai kahin ye paani bhi
ban jaaye na sharaab
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman

baaghon ke aas paas bhi
jaana na bhool ke
baaghon ke aas paas bhi
jaana na bhool ke
hogaa bhari bahaar mein
phoolon ka jee kharaab
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman

tujhko banaane waala bhi
sau koshishen kare
tujhko banaane waala bhi
sau koshishen kare
laa na sakegaa dhoondh ke
tera koi jawaab
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman
tera gora badan
jaise khilta huaa ghulaab
zaalim teri jawaani
qayaamat tera shabaab
ae jaane chaman

I remember seeing this movie as a young boy. I remember it quite well – it was about pearl-diving. I remember this song also very well. Most popular song of the movie.

So it is literally about “Anmol Moti” (priceless pearl) ? I thought it was about something more esoteric.

Lovely. I think Ravi is so unappreciated 😦 and Mahendra Kapoor’s voice so wonderful…thanks for sharing this.

Anmol Moti was quite a popular movie at its time, touted as the first underwater film in India.
