Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Raaz e dil unse chhupaayaa na gayaa

Posted on: August 5, 2010

Here is a song from “Apna Banaa Ke Dekho” (1962). This song is sung by Rafi. I do not have the video of this song available, but I am awre that this movie had Manoj Kumar and Asha Parekh in lead roles, so one can safely assume that this song is picturised on Manoj Kumar.

Asad Bhopali is the lyricist and Ravi is the music director.

I have recently become interested in statistics pertaining to the number of songs of various artists that I have posted. For instance, I have realised that this song is the 762 th Rafi song posted in this blog. Mind blowing, is it not !

song-Raaz e dil unse chhupaaya naa gayaa (Apna Banaake Dekho) (1962) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics- Asad Bhopali, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

raaz-e-dil unse chhupaayaa naa gayaa
raaz-e-dil unse chhupaayaa naa gayaa
pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki
pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki
ek sholaa bhi dabaayaa na gayaa
ek sholaa bhi dabaayaa na gayaa
raaz-e-dil unse chhupaayaa naa gayaa

pahle-pahle to mujhe wo samajh bhi na sake
dil ko tadpaate rahe mujhko tarsaate rahe
aankh se aankh kayi baar mili
aankh se aankh kayi baar mili
dil se dil phir bhi milaayaa na gayaa
pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki
ek sholaa bhi dabaayaa na gayaa
raaz-e-dil unse chhupaayaa naa gayaa

aankh milte hi jhuki baat honthon pe ruki
berukhi pyaar bani jeet bhi haar bani
kar gayi kaam muhabbat ki nazar
kar gayi kaam muhabbat ki nazar
unse daaman bhi bachaayaa na gayaa
pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki
pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki
ek sholaa bhi dabaayaa na gayaa
raaz-e-dil unse chhupaayaa naa gayaa

Wow, 762 Rafi saab songs! That’s stupendous.
Only another 3754 to go!

Just kidding. 🙂 This is what wiki has to say about Rafi saab “according to the available figures, Rafi has sung 4,516 Hindi film songs, 112 non-Hindi film songs, and 328 private (non-film) songs from 1945 to 1980”.

Of course wiki is not necessarily accurate here.

Wikipedia figure seems more or less on the mark. I am not aiming to post every song, my aim is to post the great songs which one likes to listen to, and it appears that most Rafi songs fall in that category. As I progress, I maybegin to find that I have no more songs to cover. But fortunately, that stage will not be reached for many more years.

Of course, nobody expects you to post every single song he has sung. And tbh, even a diehard fan like me must admit that I did not like some of his songs. Esp towards the late 60s where his voice sometimes sounded tired/strained/maybe over-worked. No disrespect (wouldn’t dream of it!), just my opinion on some songs.

I think every singer has had songs that he/she is not particularly proud of. Exceptions happen. Like Bhajji taking a wicket. 😉

raja are you a Rafi fan? Some one else (Nasir) has a blog where he posts Rafi songs with the lyrics.

I was not aware of this blog. I visited there and I realised that I have posted about 100 more Rafi songs here than are posted in his blog, and that too in a shorter duration. So I am no less a Rafi fan than him. 😀

And then I am a Lata fan, Kishore fan, Mukesh fan, Talat Mehmood fan, etc etc too. 😀

And Raja is no different from me in this regard.

This blog has more than 3500 Rafi songs.

I love Rafi’s voice, but then I am also a Talat fan, Hemant fan, Mukesh fan (to a lesser degree!), and Rafi is terrific in this song. It is great news that you have posted 762 songs of his so far. I have been noticing a lot of Rafi songs in your blog recently, so at this rate, you should soon touch 800. However, and this is my personal opinion, his songs in the ’50s and early ’60s are probably his best.

Thanks for the song, Atul!

@sophy, yes, I am a big fan of Rafi saab. But I am a fan of other singers also. I believe every singer has sung good songs, great songs – and also some rather forgettable ones (on the day that it just does not come out right!).

In a sense, I go more by the song than by the singer.

Since Rafi saab sang so many songs, purely in terms of quantity, he has the largest number of “great” songs but also probably the largest number of “not-so-great” songs. Happens when you churn out so many songs. I personally do not rate some of his late-1960s songs as much as songs earlier in his career. He comes across in some of them as tired/overworked/strained. Understandable – he was probably singing in every other movie, if not every movie.

Maybe that was one reason why Kishore became so successful in 1969 with Aradhana and continued his domination thereafter. Apart from the fact that older heroes (Rafi’s “faces”) were on their way out, Kishore came as a breath of fresh air for the public too, I guess.

This is not to say Kishore was the better singer. I think for those few years that Kishore ruled (1970-1976 at least), he was KING. Rafi, over an entire career, produced so many gems, he does not need to defend his quality to anybody.

Usually, I avoid discussions like “Was Rafi better or Kishore?” because it tends to end up demeaning one of the two singers. That is something I really don’t like. I think we should just enjoy songs, the lyrics, the music – and respect all those involved in the creation and rendition of the song.

Did not intend this to be such a long comment – but those who know me well, know that I tend to just let myself go sometimes. 🙂

@sophy, sorry, forgot to mention about Nasir’s blog. Yes, I am aware of it. Have visited it a few times – a very long time ago, though. So little time, so many blogs to visit/read. 🙂 For my music dose, I tend to come here (Atul’s space) or just youtube.
Thanks for mentioning it to me anyway – I had completely forgotten about it.

raja– sorry I started all this quite inadvertently. I was on youtube and saw a channel I thought was yours–and he was a rafi fan. So that was it but I don’t like to ask personal questions ever and so my ambiguous comment. Like they say, kya se kya ho gaya.

Arrey, kuchh nahin hua. 🙂
So I have no idea what you are apologising about. 🙂 Unless my comment comes across as if I got offended or something. If so, it is I who need to apologise. 🙂

Khair, I think I know the channel you are talking about. The guy has an awesome collection of Rafi saab songs posted there. Lots of really vague ones.

I also thought that it was our Raja who was posting all those songs in youtube. His nickname is so similar to Raja’s.

Rafi no doubt Fantastic but this song is totally Ravi’s.

aankh milte hi jhuki baat honthon pe ruki
berukhi pyaar bani jeet bhi haar bani
kar gayi kaam muhabbat ki nazar
kar gayi kaam muhabbat ki nazar
unse daaman bhi bachaayaa na gayaa

pyaar ki aag kuchh aisi bhadki

koi bhi rafi ji jesa nahi ho sakta god bless you rafi ji thanku atul…
