Ye duniyaa roop ki chor

Posted on: September 19, 2010

There are atleast two movies called “Shabnam” that I am aware of. One was released in 1949 and another on 1964. I have posted songs in this blog from both these movies.

Here is a delightful song from “Shabnam” (1949). In this song, Kamini Kaushal describes the experiences of a pretty girl when when men coming from different regions make passes on her. The song is a light hearted song and it makes full use of stereotypes. Today, all that description may be regarded as politically incorrect, but people those days took such songs in their strides and had fun listening to such songs.

In this song, a girl is propositioned by men from five different regions viz a Bengali, a Gujarati, A Marathi, a “Madrasi”, and a Punjabi, and each one woos her singing in his regional style.

To put things in perspective, those days India had states called Bombay and Madras, and the present day states like Maharashtra, Gujrat, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka etc had not been formed. All South Indian people were called Madrasis by people of North India, irrespective of the the region in south they came from (it was all Madras state in those days in any case).

If one can have an open mind, this is a great fun song to listen to. It is sung by Shamshad Begam with gusto and great competence. She sings passages of the song in five different languages apart from Hindi and does a great job while singing in different regional styles.

Qamar Jalalabadi, who many people may regard as a boring shayar, but who in reality was a lyricist with a great sense of humour, has written the funny lyrics of this song. The same Qamar Jalalabadi (original name Omprakash Bhandari) also later wrote the well known song Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) and also the rip roaringly funny song Guni jano bhakt jano(Aansoo aur muskaan).

Here is this supremely funny song from Shabnam (1949) which is sung by Shamshad Begam and is picturised as a stage song on Kamini Kaushal and others. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist and music is composed by S D Burman.

While getting the lyrics of the song, I am not fully sure about the lyrics of the song, especially in the regional languages. Readers, who are familiar with such languages are requested to point out the errors and provide the correct words, so that I may be able to make the necessary corrections.

Song-Ye duniyaa roop ki chor (Shabnam) (1949) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

ye duniyaa roop ki chor
ye duniyaa roop ki chor
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor

ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
raste mein milaa ik Bangaali
dhoti dheeli-dhaali
raste mein milaa ik Bangaali
darshan kaa abhilaashi
wo kahne lagaa
kyaa
wo kahne lagaa
jol khaabe
rosogullaa khaabe
aur kahne lagaa
ami tumi bhaalobaashi
maai ri bhaalobaashi
bhaalobaashi
main kyaa jaanoon ami tumi,
main bhaagi tumhaari or
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor

huyi mulaaqaat meri ek Gujraati se
kahne lagaa mujhe saaro chhe saaro chhe
sun chhe, kem chhe, kem chhe, saaro chhe
chhe chhe chhe chhe
ak chhee
o
maare te aangne ek waar aawo jo
maare te aangne ek waar aawo jo
maare te aangne ek waar aawo jo
main kyaa jaanoon aawo jo aawo jo
bhaagi tumhaari or
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor

ek Maraathaa saahab aalaa
aate hi sab gadbadjhaalaa
kabhi kahe asa kaay
kabhi kahe tasa kaay
asa kaay tasa kaay asa kaay tasa kaay
bar bar bar bar bar
chatk chaandni ikade ye zaraa ikade ye
jee jee jee jee jee jee
ag goolaabaachi kalee zaraa ikad ye zaraa ikde ye
jee jee jee jee jee jee
main kyaa jaanoon ikde tikde
bhaagi tumhaari or
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor

ae ae ae ae
ek Madraasi lagaa bulaane
ae ae ae ae
main lagi jaane to wo lagaa gaane
ae ae ae ae
chakrapane aadi rukmaniye
inne naadi vandane,
e nakki ked vandade
ae ae ae ae
chakrapane aadi rukmaniye
unne naadi vandane,
e nakki ked vandade
ae ae ae ae
he he sun ke ho gayaa bukhaar mujhe
bhaagi tumhaari or
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor

o o o o
raste mein milaa ik Panjaabi
kahne lagaa teri ankhiyaan gulaabi
teri ankhiyaan gulaabi
o o o o
balle, balle, balle, balle
o baliye, o lassiye, o soniye malaaiye
kitaai mainu sharaabi
ho jab kaar ke gaddi hi vich bah jaate royen gich
ped khaayengi chhai chhai
chhai chhai sun ke chapplen utaar ke
bhaagi tumhaari or
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu
bachaa le mujhe baabu re
ye duniyaa roop ki chor
