Saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain

Posted on: October 11, 2010

As long as Amitabh Bachchan was on his way up, the movie makers of his movies worked on their movies and paid attention to the various aspects of the movies. As Amitabh Bachchan reached the top and entrenched his position there, the movies starring him were no longer the same.

In these movies, the movie makers tried to capitalise Amitabh Bachan’s image and stature. He no longer played angry young man, he began playing the superstar in all his movies. The movie makers, especially Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra took their audience for granted and began to believe that all they needed to do was to just sign up Amitabh Bachchan as hero and dish out any fare they felt like to the public. In short, the movie makers of these Amitabh Bachchan began to take their audience for granted.

Most Amitabh Bachcahn movies of 1980s are like that. Of course the loyal devotees of Amitabh Bachchan continued to flock to movie halls to watch these movies, but it was obvious that these movies ran because of momentum built from the past performances of Amitabh Bachan imn past movies and not because of any merits in these movies.

Coolie was one of those movies that was clearly made to capitalise on Amitabh Bachchan’s superstar status. Manmohan Desai, the same person who gave so much attention to details in past movies such as “Amar Akbar Anthony” stopped caring for his audience.

Forget Manmohan Desai, even Amitabh Bachchan himself bought his own hype. He played superhero in his movies and he began to believe in his own invincibility. Manyn of the dangerous stunt scenes are normally done by duplicates/ extras, but here Amitabh Bachchan decided to do his own fight scene. while performing his own fight scene (a routine scene), his stomach hit against a table and before one knew, he was in a critical state and the entire nation was worried. He was admitted to ICU of an hospital and his medical report formed part of the news broadcast on government radio on aregular basis.

When he recovered and the shooting of the movie began again, Manmohan Desai sought to capitalise on this accident and even I believe that the movie succeeded because of this accident and not because of any inheret merit in the movie.

Here is a song from this movie, which could be called the theme song of the movie as well as the introduction song. In this song, Amitabh Bachchan and others are shown running to the platform as a train arrives and then Amitabh Bachan is seen carying luggage while singing “saari duniyaa ka bojh ham uthate hain” (we carry the luggage of the entire world”. It is all very well, but the luggage consists of three suitcases on his head that look totally empty and a holdall on his hand which is just as empty. If the superstar cannot carry luggages then the movie maker should have used an extra to carry proper luggage. Imagine Arnold Schawrnegger made to carry cardboard logs instead of real heavy logs on his shoulders. I as a fan felt cheated, even though most fans did not bother.

Then Amitabh Bachchan is not seen to behave like a coolie, but like a superstar. He tells Rati Agnihotri (a passenger boarding the train and a stranger to him) that Gods have taken extra care and time creating her. Imagine a coolie using such words to a lady passenger . That is why I remarked that in this movie, Amitabh Bachchan was not playing a coolie but a superstar, and that the makers of this movie were taking the public for a ride.

As far as the song is concerned, it is a hummable song. It is sung by Shabbir Kumar, a Rafi clone (Rafi had died a couple of years ago). Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.

Here is this theme song from “Coolie” (1983).

Song-Saari duniyaa ka bojh ham uthaate hain (Coolie) (1983) Singer-Shabbir Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
uthaate hain,
bojh uthaate hain,
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
log aate hain log jaate hain
ham yahin pe khade rah jaate hain,
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain

chaar kaa kaam
ek kaa daam hai
chaar kaa kaam
ek kaa daam hai
khoon mat peejiye
aur kuchh deejiye
ek rupaiyyaa hai kam
ham Khudaa ki qasam
badi mehnat se roti kamaate hain,
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain

thodaa paani piyaa
yaad rab ko kiyaa
bhookh bhi mit gayi
pyaas bhi bujh gayi
thodaa paani piyaa
yaad rab ko kiyaa
bhookh bhi mit gayi
pyaas bhi bujh gayi
kaam har haal mein
naam ko saal mein
Eid ki ek chhutti manaate hain,
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain

jeenaa mushqil to hai
apnaa bhi dil to hai
dil mein armaan hain
ham bhi insaan hain
jeenaa mushqil to hai
apnaa bhi dil to hai
dil mein armaan hain
ham bhi insaan hain
jab sataate hai gham
aish karte hain ham
jab sataate hai gham
aish karte hain ham
beedi peete hain aur paan khaate hain
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
log aate hain log jaate hain
ham yahin pe khade rah jaate hain,
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
saari duniyaa kaa bojh ham uthaate hain
