Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon

Posted on: October 25, 2010

“Kabhi Kabhi” (1976) is a movie whose music was quite unlike the music prevalent in Hindi movies at that time. The music of this movie had a retro feel about it and music lovers liked that. The songs of this movie became popular and they in fact have outlived most songs of that era.

The songs of this movie were written by Sahir Ludhainvi and music was composed by Khayyam, who was by no means a hot property as a music director. But Yash Chopra, the producer and director of this movie was one who did not believe in following the crowd, and he made his own decisions. I am happy that we had such movie makers who dared to make different movies. He could very well have decided to remake his earlier hit, which was “Deewaar” (1975), no less !

This movie has a song “main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon”. This song is picturised as a stage song on Amitabh Bachchan , who plays a poet in this movie. Sahir Ludhianvi could well be describing himself in this song. The words are simple and easy to follow, and yet, these simple words convey some profound thoughts in an easy to understand manner.

Typically Kishore Kumar used to be the voice of Amitabh Bachchan those days, but Khayyam chose Mukesh. And one must say that Mukesh’s voice is tailormade for the songs of this movie.

Here is this superb song “main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon” from “Kabhi Kabhi”. The movie version and audio version contain the same three stanzas, but the audio version repeats the lines twice instead of once in the picturisation.

This song is just the ideal song to pay tribute to Sahir Ludhainavi, who died on 25th october, 1980, exactly thirty years ago. He has left us with a treasure trove of great songs, which will continue to entrall us for a long time to come. He made his debut in 1951 and bowed out in 1980. That way, he was active for the entire period of the golden era of Hindi movie music.

This song also has another version (Main har ik pal ka shaayar hoon). This is a separate song by all means, but I have included this version too in this writeup, considering the similarity of the lyrics. Lyrics of this version were sent to me by Sadanand Kamath.

Song-Main pal do pal ka shgaayar hoon (Kabhi Kabhi) (1976) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Khayyam

Lyrics

main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon
pal do pal meri kahaani hai
pal do pal meri hasti hai
pal do pal meri jawaani hai
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon
pal do pal meri kahaani hai
pal do pal meri hasti hai
pal do pal meri jawaani hai
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon

mujhse pahle kitne shaayar
aaye aur aakar chale gaye
kuchh aahen bhar kar laut gaye
kuchh naghme gaakar chale gaye
wo bhi ek pal kaa kissaa thhey
main bhi ek pal kaa kissaa hoon
kal tumse judaa ho jaaungaa
wo aaj tumhaaraa hissaa hoon
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon
pal do pal meri kahaani hai
pal do pal meri hasti hai
pal do pal meri jawaani hai
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon

kal aur aayenge naghmon ki
khilti kaliyaan chunane waale
mujhse behtar kahne waale
tumse behtar sunane waale
kal koi mujhko yaad kare
kyun koi mujhko yaad kare
masroof zamaanaa mere liye
kyun waqt apnaa barbaad kare
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon
pal do pal meri kahaani hai
pal do pal meri hasti hai
pal do pal meri jawaani hai
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon
pal do pal meri kahaani hai
pal do pal meri hasti hai
pal do pal meri jawaani hai
main pal do pal kaa shaayar hoon

Second version (Lyrics provided by Sadanand Kamath)
————————————————–
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon
har ek pal meri kahaani hai
har ek pal meri hasti hai
har ek pal meri jawaani hai
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon

rishton kaa roop badaltaa hai
buniyaaden khatm nahin hotin een een
khwaabhon ki aur umangon ki
miyaaden khatm nahin hotin een een
ek phool mein teraa roop basaa
ek phool mein meri jawaani hai
ek chehraa teri nishaani hai
ek chehraa meri nishaani hai
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon
har ek pal meri kahaani hai
har ek pal meri hasti hai
har ek pal meri jawaani hai
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon

tujhko mujhko jeewan amrit
ab in haathon se peenaa hai
inki dhadhkan mein basnaa hai
inke saanson mein jeenaa hai
tu apni adaayen baksh inhen
main apni wafaayen detaa hoon
jo apne liye sochi thhin kabhi
wo saari duaayen detaa hoon
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon
har ek pal meri kahaani hai
har ek pal meri hasti hai
har ek pal meri jawaani hai
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon
har ek pal meri kahaani hai
har ek pal meri hasti hai
har ek pal meri jawaani hai
main har ek pal kaa shaayar hoon

I love this song. So philosophical. Full marks to Sahir. And Mukesh’s voice is just the right voice for this song.

I personally don’t think Yash Chopra made “different” movies. He was/is a total commercial-minded guy, who has a very sense of the audience’s pulse. He typically used the biggest names of the time, used elaborate fancy locales like Kashmir and Switzerland which have always been big attractions for film-going masses, became the master of love triangles (Daag, Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, Chandni, Dil To Paagal Hai and some more).

Nothing wrong with not making “different” films, of course. I must admit to having enjoyed many Yash Chopra movies. But they are usually out-and-out commercial movies. When he tried something different – with Kaala Patthar (story of miners) – it bombed.

The director in the family who really made “different” movies was BR Chopra, Yash’s elder brother. BR is one of the directors/producers I respect most in Hindi cinema. His movies were ahead of their time, they hit out at traditional social conventions. For this reason, they were high-risk at the box-office (and controversial) but BR was committed to his cause and stuck to his task.

His movies include Kanoon (interesting take on the legal system), Ek Hi Raasta (about widow re-marriage), Sadhna (about a prostiture being accepted into society as a wife), Dhool Ka Phool (about impact on a child of parents abandoning the child), Dharamputra (about the days leading up to partition and its impact on Hindu-Muslim friends).

I love this song, just for the lyrics and for Mukesh. I saw the movie and was disappointed to see a 35 year old Amitabh and a 30+ Raakhee pretending to be in college, and I think that was where my disillusionment with Amitabh started (around the time that the rest of India fell in love with him!), plus I preferred Shashi Kapoor’s role in that movie. Amitabh fans, my apologies!

objection Milord(as they say in our movies)
Rakhee had just turned 25 when the movie was released. she is part of the 1947 batch of Indian heroines and there are quite a few of them

Have seen this movie many times just to enjoy music/song.

Salute to Khayyam and Sahir Ludhianvi.

Sahir Ludhianvi was the star ex-alumni of the college I grew being a neighbour of. The other day someone was discussing street food and samosas, and a truly famous samosa and gulab jamun halwai was located outside the college. Apparently Sahir was a great customer and even after he became well-known, whenever he was back in town he would go there

I ahve eaten those samosas and gulan jamuns all my life, but no poetry has ever come out.
